• John Wick: Chapter 4

    John Wick: Chapter 4

    ★★★★★

HOW DO THEY KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!! In a world where it no longer seems possible for every movie in a franchise to be a banger, Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski emerge from the shadows, ghostly silhouettes in black suits, and say “shhhh it’s okay. We have more dogs and Donnie Yen. We also did that overhead tracking shot you wanted, and made our universe’s version of Daredevil and the Penguin. You will see old favorites, and be introduced…

  • Aftersun

    Aftersun

    ★★★★★

You never really shake that feeling of seeing darkness in your parents that you don’t understand yet. The sudden realization that holes are being poked in your perfect image of them, and you don’t know whether to resent them or pity them or all of the above. I don’t like to get very personal with reviews but it’s hard to separate my thoughts on Aftersun from my own experiences, and it’s worth mentioning that I’ve probably never felt so acutely…

  • The Worst Person in the World

The Worst Person in the World

    ★★★★½

Julie is a good person, but she doesn’t know that yet. All she knows is that she’s never happy in situations where she “should” be, and she’s the common denominator. It’s an astute observation that she has spent most of her adult life woefully misinterpreting. Me too Julie!

There’s this paradox humans love where we seek independence through dependency, and hurt others in our effort to not hurt them - two things that reveal themselves to be inherently selfish once…

  • Don't Look Up

    Don't Look Up

    ★★★

It’s not good when real life is funnier than your comedic commentary on it, but it’s a hard line to beat to be fair.

I like Adam McKay and I enjoyed this but I agree with those who think he’s taking himself too seriously. This can’t figure out whether it’s trying to be an apocalyptic drama/straight faced satire or a spoof. Don’t get me wrong, I am proudly in the choir, but the preaching feels too much like it was…

  • The Matrix Resurrections

    The Matrix Resurrections

    ★★★★½

The divisiveness of this film is happening before our very eyes, which is the only realistic outcome when such a beloved and influential franchise gets a reboot into the world of 2021. It’s a hard pill to swallow (ha), but The Matrix was destined to never be left alone, and it might be the perfect tool to simultaneously contribute to and critique the current blockbuster landscape.

I think it’s unfair to expect a fourth film to tread entirely new ground,…

  • Nightmare Alley

    Nightmare Alley

    ★★★½

    "No man can outrun God."

I went into Nightmare Alley expecting a dark noir, but what I got was also a damning and cynical dissection of the human psyche. Stanton Carlisle is a con man, put simply. He knows that it is human nature to lie to ourselves and believe what we want to hear, so he exploits that to its fullest extent - then takes it off the brink. While this character study doesn't nearly live up to the likes…

  • The Matrix

    The Matrix

    ★★★★★

The fact that The Matrix even exists is a miracle. It's a rare and momentous shift in culture when a creative mind, or in this case two minds, give birth to a new genre and change film forever in just two hours and sixteen minutes.

The Wachowskis' superpower here was not only their refusal to compromise a single part of their artistic vision, but their firm (and ahem correct) belief that cool shit and powerful storytelling are of equal importance. There…

  • C'mon C'mon

    C'mon C'mon

    ★★★★

Exactly what you’d expect. A simple film about real things that is just as earnest as it is painfully cathartic. Parents are just imperfect people trying their best to protect us from the world. Kids should be treated as people, and their view of the world should be treated as valuable because it is.

I think everyone will take away something different from C’mon C’mon based on what you’ve experienced in your own life and childhood! It made me grieve…

  • Belfast

    Belfast

    ★★★★

Ya, this is my shit. I adored Belfast.

I find myself drawing a lot of parallels with this film - the Irish Brady Bunch dynamic of My Left Foot, the coming-of-age-in-a-war-zone story of Jojo Rabbit, or the strained working class relationship we see in something like Minari. This is because nothing in Belfast is entirely new, but what makes it feel so special is Kenneth Branagh’s heart and clear personal connection to what he’s putting on the screen. It’s a…

  • Eternals

    Eternals

    ★★½

I accidentally made this video more about Marvel and Eternals as a whole oops but it’s there! And it’s way too long but I guess that’s fitting

TL;DW: I think Eternals suffers from similar issues to Wonder Woman 1984 in that it’s too long, convoluted, and attempts to juggle more than it needs to. It absolutely has its moments with the characters/action, but the writing is poor, there are too many characters, and the visuals are good but not good enough to justify its $200 million budget.

Now pls no one talk to me about this movie ever again

  • Last Night in Soho

    Last Night in Soho

    ★★★

Last Night in Soho is some of Edgar Wright’s most ambitious and experimental work to date. Unfortunately for me, it didn’t live up to its intriguing premise. His usual style of putting an outlandish twist on a more conventional coming of age/feel good story works best when it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and tones do more than just clash in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The first half excels in its pursuit of pure horror/thriller madness, but once…

  • The Last Duel

    The Last Duel

    ★★★★½

i am fucking speechless. I’m gonna probably delete this and come back to do a real review lol but I just wanted to broadcast to this godforsaken app that this movie is phenomenal, crying and shaking when i came out and this time that’s not a joke. It will not resonate to that degree with everyone obv but this is a masterful ass film and it is IMPORTANT and Jodie Comer is BRILLIANT and everyone sucks for not believing women. Go see it
