Now why did no one tell me this is Craig Gillespie’s best movie and about the cathartic experience of letting go of your coping mechanisms and how that in itself is a heartbreak but you can do it in your own time and there are people around you who love you and will support you in unexpected ways……….. new comfort movie just dropped, I’m crying, i love you Ryan Gosling, Paul Schneider has never been hotter

The Coffee Table…… I almost resent that I was entertained because it exists merely to provoke you, worst-case-scenario stuff not unlike A Serbian Film (not that bad but you get the point). Teetering on tonal catastrophe, “black comedy” doesn’t really feel like the right label for it but sure it’s extremely uncomfortable and I can’t say I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re curious.

I guess I’ll be the bad guy OH BROTHER, no denying there’s plenty to chew on here about mythmaking and fanaticism, progress and coexistence, having Noa be our proxy to reflect on this saga is a welcome perspective. The attempt to balance it all is plodding and distant though, stretching its runtime out to painful lengths, and I think I’m just a lost cause on how self serious these movies are. Even the jokes can’t pierce through the dour veil here and it leaves me feeling exhausted (no Hollywood this is not an invitation for Apes x Deadpool). Kevin Durand burns it down as Proximus though, mesmerizing performance.

Not sure the heavy-handed allegory here has aged very well, but the grimy world Lyne creates and the attention to unlawful military experiments is certainly timeless. Some of Tim Robbin’s best work, with an ending that is obvious but moving nonetheless. Shoutout chiropractors??

Always loved this one, best viewed not as a thrill ride but a tragic journey through the mind of a violent man in a violent society. Trauma ricocheting like bullets in the wake of World War II, a new world that those victimized by it can’t recognize or be a part of anymore. In certain ways, one of Scorsese’s bleakest. “Which would be worse - to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?”

Like an entire season of your favorite comic book soap opera scrambled into 2 hours and 19 minutes, forgiveness as a superpower and selflessness as a nonnegotiable lesson when coming of age. Sam Raimi the man who can animate drying paint, that there isn’t a drop of irony in the whole thing is both a comforting escape and sad reminder that these just don’t look like they used to. Mary Jane Watson you are literally stronger than the marines.

Goddamn, what a movie to watch so soon after Challengers. Per usual, Scorsese kinda did it first. The way he shot/constructed the pool scenes is superhuman. Let’s all get over ourselves so we can play some fuckin 9 ball.

Oh I am simultaneously heartbroken and pissed off. One of the most obnoxious uses of voiceover ever but that is just one decision of many that turned this really cool premise into a grating slog and completely wasted the choreography/cast. I genuinely really wanted to like this but at every turn I was scratching my head or rolling my eyes. Needed 10x less Deadpool and 10x more Speed Racer.

Evil The Abyss. Though I do think the way this was cut down did a significant amount of damage, the Boschian depiction of hell is one of the gnarliest things I’ve ever seen and I hope the powers that be can get us the version Paul W. S. Anderson actually wanted one day

It’s possible I just have a very short-lived appetite for the brand of horror that Radio Silence puts out, but this felt very conveyor belt to me compared to the witty, fully realized thrill ride of Ready or Not (they share a lot of similarities). Of course the premise is fun and makes for some pleasing moments of blood and guts, and the cast is easily the strongest element, but lots of jokes don’t work and I just can’t get past how ultimately lackluster both the script and filmmaking felt. Like the most obvious, recycled execution of the whole thing. The First Omen you grow on me by the minute

“Thanks for setting the night on fire” should earn jail time

First stop in my mini year of Italian cinema! Pretty devastating picture of desperation and division in the working class, where small acts of kindness earn a life debt. Sad that almost 80 years later this appreciation for the moral grays of survival in a broken system isn’t commonplace. He better stop sprinting off without Bruno or he’s gonna be childless too!

Appreciate the sentiment re: Almodóvar’s response to Brokeback Mountain but unfortunately a lot of it plays like one of those fake trailers before Tropic Thunder. Also distressed by the lighting on actors’ faces simply not matching with where the windows are

I will be first in line for a Guy Ritchie film until I die, but I haven’t felt that edge from him in a while and at this point it just feels like wasted potential. He approaches basically his Inglourious Basterds with a nonchalance we’ve seen before - they’re slicing through Nazis like butter, blowing shit up with reckless abandon, and somehow always getting away with it. It’s charming, but I’d be hard pressed to note a sequence in here that genuinely excited me or presented anything innovative. It’s like Operation Fortune in a different font, but at least that one was cracking some jokes (and had a Jason Statham gun cam). The climax should impress but doesn’t get the chance because it’s too dark to see. Is this worse than directors jail, is it directors limbo? What’s going on my brother. I’m here if you need to phone a friend.

For all the talk about Immaculate being shocking, The First Omen kind of just showed them up with the freaky shit! There are definitely signs of some studio-influenced editing tomfoolery, which was to be expected from an addition to a franchise like this and can hobble the narrative at times. Sad, but Arkasha Stevenson’s direction shines through with a heavy assist from Nell Tiger Free’s star making performance. Real ones have known how great she is since Servant. Really gorgeous movie that has the patience of a 70s horror film in the first act, maybe a little too much, but ramps up into something genuinely suspenseful that ties into the original film perfectly. It arguably even improves on the approach to the Omen concept in the midst of civil unrest. Fun! Maybe we can be done with the nun stuff for a while though.

Me during the first part of the movie: it’s fine. I like the concept but it could be executed better. Clear Rivers is a dumb name.

Certain scenes in this film are permanently seared into my brain from watching as a kid, and to this day it is the gargantuan spectacle that we deserve out of a Kong movie. The wilderness of Skull Island and the commotion of NYC are painted with the same brush, both unforgiving death traps depending on who’s walking in. The runtime is exhausting for sure, I would gladly sacrifice a couple of the Skull Island thrills to get it under 3 hours, but ultimately it’s this same unsatisfied feeling that holds me back… it’s a pretty straight remake with added character development (and also the depiction of the Skull Island natives??? come on man), so still unclear on if we haven’t peaked yet or if I just don’t love the story. Could explain why the genre fun and different take of Kong: Skull Island excites me more despite Jackson’s technical prowess. Whatever, they’re all fun to watch.
