very complex as expected, but i felt like it walking through its philosophies alongside its viewers rather than being too heavy-handed. a beautiful open-ended contemplation that i'm grateful was able to be preserved in such a format. another final scene that'll stick with me forever. even with everything you don't know, would you still choose to believe?

never seen something so aesthetically pleasing yet thematically a complete mess, it literally feels ai-generated. what the hell was that and i'm not even talking about the "crazy" scenes. also every shot of jacob elordi was so obviously made with the hopes of him being edited fifty million times on tiktok which ok i honestly have to respect

one of my most anticipated films of 2023, i have to say it was a lot more to process than what i expected,,,with most other ghibli movies starting with a solid storyline and allowing its abstract themes to flourish later on, i feel like the boy and the heron almost functions backwards. "how do you live?" feels so fitting for the sheer breadth of this film that i almost wish they had kept that title. life throws things at you faster than you can gather them in your little hands... will you scramble to balance and stack them onto each other, or feel content with seeing your memories be melted away by time's loving flame? a few years down the road, i think miyazaki's most incoherent film yet may prove to be his most sincere. will also always be blown away by how intimate his scenes always feel. has one of the best hugs i've ever seen in a movie i could feel the love in my bones </3

felt awful afterwards. got so sad whenever he would fall into the pier dream and the colors would get so much softer and paler. "you make me feel like a person"

the final scenes really made this for me; with much of the film set in a sluggish liminality, i had to realize that rather than a fault of the narrative, the slow-pacedness was a reflection of yutaka being stuck rooted in a life and body that he never got the chance to grow into. when the world leaves you behind you can only cling on to what you know.

love when movies are electric and fun. also extremely visually pleasing. i need to look like her,,,girls are sweet beautiful angels on earth but we already knew that. if they had kissed sitting together on her bike i think it would have been perfect. tommy heavenly mentioned !!

a day for a girl can be a lifetime

the colors are so beautiful. in front of you unfolds an angelic apocalypse. it's easy to wrap yourself around something when you no longer care about where hope ends and truth begins.

children are so special

wish i had been sentient and conscious in 2004

gorgeous final scene, left me with a misty heart...i know how delphine feels so well, especially when she was having that conversation at the beach. sometimes you can look at the world with so much hope in your eyes it feels like there is none left for others to look at you with. the green ray comes to us in different forms,,,noticing all the little things can be a treasure just as much as it can be a burden.

me when i yearn a little too hard and start losing brain cells
some bits felt too soap-y for my taste and her crazy choices aside i just couldn't bring myself to care very much about asako's character, she felt so flat. i was still really blown away by certain scenes (long shot of asako chasing after ryohei in the rain was really nice + the final moment). i thought about how everyone has their own version of a "what if", and how the paths we didn't take can look so beautiful from another life. nostalgia can be a very selfish thing.

really great final scene. made america look so miserable and beautiful, a fantasyland that you can see right through

aggressively gen-z super dark times

i love when movies portray youth as being something so ugly and sickening but also something so fleeting and beautiful and difficult to put into words. your entire soul squeezed into three short-lived years, can you stay in one place forever? maybe after graduation the sky will finally look the way it should again.

whether you've dreamed it or whether you've lived it eventually everything ends up washed away

life can be so bleak but it can also be so loving. another girl out there is also living and yearning under the same sky and maybe just knowing so is enough for me.

it's hard to think of another movie that's left me in such a state of awe and existential terror. there is so much packed into oppenheimer that it's hard to call it just a biopic, or an attempt at documenting the events that surrounded what is one of the worst crimes ever made on humanity. the flimsy fences between science and politics, how blinding one's own pride can be, the exact moment brilliance starts to bleed into brutality. whether a human being can even exist outside of the ideas they've innovated, or in some cases, the crimes they've committed. this was infinite times better on rewatch. i said it before but the score is truly so breathtaking. honestly it is just ridiculous and sickening how good this movie is. the most certain five stars i've given in a long time. okay nolan i'll give you this one...
