I Saw the TV Glow 2024
The real message in here is that if you’re in a car with Jane Schoenbrun, you gotta give them the aux.

I Saw the TV Glow 2024
That’s an insane film. That’s a nightmare. Those are some of the most frightening sequences I have seen since Hereditary. The immediate reaction this film got out of me was the craziest thing I’ve experienced in my 27 years of film-watching.
Every so often comes a film that feels monumental, not necessarily in scale (i.e. Dune: Part 2) but in its influence and its captivating expression. It’s almost intimidating to even discuss and its weird talking about it after one…

Challengers 2024
it’s remarkable that luca guadagnino finds tennis boring to watch because i have never seen the sport filmed with such energy and reverence. but that’s also precisely why he’s perfect for challengers – who better than an outsider to see tennis for what it is. it’s a conversation, it’s about judgement, it’s observation. so many of luca’s films are about looking, no wonder he can infuse so much tension and meaning into the simple act of the crowd tracking the…

Challengers 2024
There is no sport more intimate or erotic than tennis. It is one of the few major sports where two players agree to partake, for hours, in a duel of body, mind, and soul. Naturally, to engage with anyone that intensely, an inescapable relationship is forged— one that intensifies with every stroke, every bead of sweat, every grunt. It may not be as fleshy as boxing, but arguably the lack of contact is what makes tennis more arousing— is not…

Civil War 2024
This one gnawed at me for a while since seeing it earlier today, and I've found the polarized reactions to it really fascinating.
Ultimately I think this movie actually pulls off a very sneaky magic trick - or at least, attempts to, I'm not actually fully convinced it DOES pull it off - of lulling an audience in with an intentionally provocative setting and premise, but then going well out of its way to NOT actually be about the titular…

Civil War 2024
The beach scene in Apocalypse Now (where Francis Ford Coppola directs the soldiers through for newsreel footage) stretched out for 110 minutes of discomfort. From post-skirmish hotel drinks to mentions of the rush of capturing battles, this works beautifully as a critique of the press and news for a desensitized state, but remains in awe of the document of history that they capture. The desensitization lays over the film which takes no political stance nor engages with the politics of…

Civil War 2024
WOW. Masterful. Alex Garland's CIVIL WAR is a stunning, mournful, riveting journey through a nightmare landscape. Somehow - and I don’t know how - this distorted reflection remains largely apolitical (or at the very least somehow completely avoids specific partisanship), which I think helps prevent it from preaching to the choir, and instead reaches much further with its critical messaging. It had me mesmerized throughout. One of the best movies of the year, for certain.
