The 2024 Popcorn List https://letterboxd.com/crew/list/the-2024-popcorn-list/ letterboxd-list-44981668 Tue, 2 Apr 2024 05:11:00 +1300 Introducing the 2024 Popcorn List, an annual survey put together by Lela Meadow-Conner and Barbara Twist to highlight independent films strongly recommended by festival programmers across the US that are currently still without domestic distribution.

The first twenty films on this list represent the films officially on The Popcorn List that are still seeking distribution. For more recommendations, Meadow-Conner and Twist put together an additional group of films that were recommended by programmers which have already released in theaters or online—or are planning to soon. You can find these recommendations listed in the positions from 21 onward.

Read a statement from Meadow-Conner and Twist below:

We’re excited to introduce you to the first 20 films that make up the inaugural The Popcorn List!

As undying champions for the theatrical movie-going experience, we’re not willing to settle for a future where the only movies on the big screen are $200+ million dollar blockbusters written by a committee and geared towards no one.

As filmmakers ourselves, receiving theatrical distribution remains our ultimate dream. We don’t want our movies to die in the graveyard called algorithm. We want them to be celebrated, in person, on a giant screen, with tubs of popcorn and Sour Patch Kids and Buncha Crunch!

The Popcorn List is an annual survey of highly-enjoyed, independently-produced feature films that do not currently have domestic theatrical or digital distribution, that come recommended by film festival programmers from across the U.S.

Some of you might have heard of The Black List—a list of Hollywood’s top unproduced screenplays. You can think of us like that —only for movies that have played at film festivals—and have been seen by many of you—but are not yet available to watch in theaters, or stream online.

We created this list because these are movies that we think deserve to be seen by everyone. (You can read more about why we think this list is needed, here.)

The movies on this list come recommended to us by film festival programmers from across the country—folks—who watch thousands of hours of movies every year—to bring their audiences films they know they’ll love. They have won jury awards, audience awards and the majority of them are highly reviewed right here.

It was important to us that we reach out to a diverse group of programmers, so on this list you’ll find films from major market festivals like Sundance and Tribeca, to amazing filmmaker and community driven festivals like Seattle International Film Festival and Sidewalk Film Festival (and twenty others in between.)

We hope that movie theater programmers and even film distributors will take notice of these films, and that The Popcorn List can continue to provide more opportunities for independent filmmakers, as it grows. So please, check them out and add them to your own watchlist!

In late January, we emailed dozens of film festival programmers with the simple query: “What’s a film that you programmed at your 2023 festival that absolutely deserves distribution—preferably in a theater—and doesn’t yet have it?”

Special thanks to the following festival programmers who participated in this inaugural list: Carlos Corral (El Paso Film Festival), Tim Anderson (Florida Film Festival), Brian Hu (San Diego Asian Film Festival), Andrew Peterson (Provincetown Film Festival), Jason Carney (Phoenix Film Festival), Skye McLennan (San Luis Obispo Film Festival), Alan LaFave (Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival), Allegra Madsen (Frameline Film Festival), Linda Eaddy (Denton Black Film Festival), Tishon Pugh (New Orleans Film Festival), Sabrina Aviles (Cinefest Latino Boston), Julia Kipnis (Nashville Film Festival), Mallory Martin (Cleveland Intl. Film Festival), Beth Barrett (Seattle Intl. Film Festival), Zoe Elton (Mill Valley Film Festival), John Nein (Sundance Film Festival), Juliet Romeo (Slamdance Unstoppable), NewFilmmakers Los Angeles Programming Team, Nehad Kedar (BlackStar Film Festival), Malin Kan (AFI Fest), David Nugent (Hamptons Film Festival), Greg Sorvig (Heartland Film Festival), Austin Film Festival Programming Team, Rachel Morgan (Sidewalk Film Festival), Ida Theresa Myklebost (Anchorage Film Festival), Jim Brunzell (Sound Unseen Film Festival), Farrington (Out on Film Festival), Mike Dougherty (Programmer at Large, Los Angeles) Faridah Gbadamosi (Tribeca) Rachel Walker (Programmer at Large), and Nancy Campbell (Independent Film Festival Boston.)

Edgar Wright’s 1,000 Favorite Movies https://letterboxd.com/crew/list/edgar-wrights-1000-favorite-movies/ letterboxd-list-7389234 Mon, 16 Mar 2020 08:31:12 +1300 This list of personal favorites was assembled by Edgar Wright and Sam DiSalle in July 2016, and is semi-regularly updated. Films are ordered by year, and alphabetized within each year (our list matches MUBI’s source list order, but some films are listed under alternative names).

Note from Edgar, August 2016:

“This is a personal and subjective list of 1,000 favourite movies from 100 years of cinema. It’s not a set text or intended as any bible of ‘greatest’ films. I decided to put this together as a fluid list for my own enjoyment, amusement and reference. I hope it’s fun for you to pore over and dive into some of the films you haven’t seen or haven’t heard of.

Don’t get all riled up about omissions or which movies you think should be favourites of mine, the truth is I may very well like / not like or not have seen the movies you think are missing. In fact, I like way more than 1,000 movies, but any longer and this list would be really insane.

Thanks to Sam DiSalle for helping me put it together. If you feel so inspired, make your own list. Film watching is a life-time pursuit and there’s many more films out there for me to see. This site is a great place to start.”

Four Favorites with Colin Farrell, Kirby and John Sugar https://letterboxd.com/crew/story/four-favorites-with-colin-farrell-kirby-and/ letterboxd-story-22806 Sun, 12 May 2024 06:04:16 +1200

Colin Farrell stars as a cinema-loving private detective in AppleTV's Sugar. Naturally, after getting his four favorite films, we asked Farrell, Kirby, and Amy Ryan to name his character's four favorite films.

Four their personal four favorites, Farrell and Kirby each chose an animated movie classic and a film that always makes them laugh. However, it was the four favorites for their series lead that showed the most camaraderie between them. For that, Kirby and Farrell each chose a film from John Huston's filmography. But Ryan, who gave us her four favorites on a separate occasion, had the biggest surprise in store after Farrell stole her noir pick, Sunset Boulevard, for Sugar.

Read up for more info on the streaming series in Dominic Corry's interview with the show's creator, Mark Protosevich.

Introducing the Letterboxd Piazza Grande Award at Locarno Film Festival https://letterboxd.com/crew/story/introducing-the-letterboxd-piazza-grande/ letterboxd-story-22652 Wed, 8 May 2024 20:00:43 +1200

Letterboxd is heading to Switzerland—introducing the inaugural Letterboxd Piazza Grande Award at this year’s Locarno Film Festival.

One of the biggest and most beautiful outdoor theaters in the world, Locarno Film Festival’s Piazza Grande is a town square most of the year, but transforms into an open-air moviegoing space every summer for 8,000 cinephiles under the stars.

This year, Letterboxd is taking over the Piazza Grande Award, celebrating cinema in one of Europe’s most beloved festivals on the world’s largest outdoor screen.

Voted for by a jury of young cinephile critics and Letterboxd crew members, the award winner will be crowned from a highly anticipated lineup of films for its artistic qualities and potential for theatrical release.

The winning title will receive extensive editorial coverage on Letterboxd and the Locarno Film Festival’s channels—which may well include a round of Four Favorites—helping to build global awareness of a new film showing at the Festival.

Matthew Buchanan, Co-Founder of Letterboxd, says of the award: “One of our guiding principles is to find ways to bring our audience of film lovers closer to the filmmakers operating at the forefront of the medium. We are thrilled to be working with the Locarno Film Festival in its 77th incarnation, to provide coverage, community reactions and filmmaker support in the most beautiful of outdoor settings.”

Locarno’s Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro adds:  “Over the past decade, Letterboxd has become one of the essential sites for film fans to share the films they love. We are proud to be the first international festival to join with Letterboxd in giving an award to films in the official selection, in this case those shown at the real heart of our Festival: under the stars on the Piazza Grande.”

The ceremony for the Letterboxd Piazza Grande Award will be held in the Piazza Grande on the evening of Saturday, August 17. Follow Locarn on Letterboxd here.

Four Favorites with I Saw the TV Glow's Jane Schoenbrun https://letterboxd.com/crew/story/four-favorites-with-i-saw-the-tv-glows-jane/ letterboxd-story-22650 Wed, 8 May 2024 19:42:00 +1200

I Saw the TV Glow writer and director Jane Schoenbrun shares their four favorite films with Letterboxd.

“I’ve tried to curate a top four I can be proud of,” says Jane Schoenbrun, fully understanding the assignment. The writer-director of I Saw the TV Glow kicks off with a vampyr with a “Y”, nodding to a film with “weird analog horror” in its bones.

Elsewhere, there’s space for “crisp, haunting, childlike” imagery a long way away from Hollywood work, as well as an underloved Coppola classic. “That is a man who’s done it all, right?”

To watch the full four from Schoenbrun, watch the video above. I Saw the TV Glow is out in the US in limited theaters, and coming to the UK at Sundance London next month.

James Cameron looks back on his career https://letterboxd.com/crew/story/james-cameron-looks-back-on-his-career/ letterboxd-story-22494 Thu, 2 May 2024 07:42:00 +1200

The Oscar-winning director of some of the most beloved blockbusters looks back at his 1978 short-film, Xenogenesis, and how it put him on the path to Avatar.

Letterboxd's London Editor Ella Kemp pulled James Cameron‘s string and got him talking about his career. In the video above, the Titanic director sat in front of a mural for his lo-fi short-film that launched his career and naturally Kemp asked for him to take us from point A to B. Or more accurately, from point X to A, as the discussion of Xenogenesis most specifically took him to Pandora since his idea for Avatar was kicking around in his head around the same time that he was filming that short film with friends.

Watch the interview above and look for more in Kemp's writeup, dropping this week, that covers the entire experience of visiting The Art of James Cameron at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris and additional soundbites from the press conference and red carpet. The museum display is the first major exhibition dedicated to Cameron in a complete retrospective of his work. It runs until January 5, 2025.

Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, Ella Rubin, Raymond Cham Jr, Michael Showalter, and The Idea of You's producers, Gabrielle Union and Cathy Schulman, give us their four favorite films.

“This is the worst moment of my life and the best moment of my life,“ The Idea of You's Ella Rubin says when she encountered the Letterboxd mic on the SXSW red carpet. Anne Hathaway had a definitive top film, which she Cher-d all the reasons why, and Nicholas Galitzine is very passionate about what he considers to be “the greatest animated film ever.“

Director Michael Showalter chooses to go thematic with the film and selects his favorite four romantic comedies. One of which he credits as being an inspiration for every film he's ever directed. Producer Gabrielle Union almost went thematic with three Eddie Murphy picks and then a Murphy-less musical.

Watch the video above for everyone‘s full four. Despite how impossible the fourth selection is for Hathaway, it happened.

The Idea of You starts streaming on Amazon Prime on May 2.

Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor talk to Letterboxd about watching Ratatouille together, how Luca Guadagnino films bodies, and the kinship between this love triangle story and Past Lives.

It is well documented at this point that the main trio of Challengers—Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor—bonded over a viewing of Ratatouille, one of O’Connor’s favorite movies.

This is, in fact, the only favorite movie discussed in the above video interview (sorry to disappoint) although Faist brings a beautiful anecdote of crossing paths and reading for Past Lives. Elsewhere, the actors reflect on their director Luca Guadagnino (“he has incredible taste”), and the bonding time they had on set.

For the full interview watch the video above. More coming soon on Journal—Challengers is in theaters worldwide now.

Kathryn Newton, Dan Stevens, Alisha Weir, William Catlett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tayler Gillett, and Jean Dawson of Abigail give us their four favorite films.

“I know what’s going to happen… I see them and I’m so impressed by people,” says Kathryn Newton upon seeing the Letterboxd microphone, knowing her four favorite movies are due. The Abigail star kicks things off with her favorite movie of all time, a Cameron Crowe classic.

Co-star Dan Stevens opts for a vampire-themed four, beginning with a 2000 independent movie, before going in with Werner Herzog’s take on a classic. Meanwhile, Newton is still “too embarrassed to confront her own four”.

To see more from the pair, alongside co-stars Alisha Weir and William Catlett, as well as filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tayler Gillett and closing credit musician Jean Dawson, watch the video above.

We Grown Now stars Jurnee Smollett and Lil Rel Howery share their four favorite movies with Letterboxd.

The stars of We Grown Now thank for us for our inimitable question, before knowing it’s only possible to name four each that come to mind today. Lil Rel Howery can indeed name the movie that was the first to ever make him cry, white Smollett shouts out a Spike Lee classic.

We move on to maybe the most named pick of all time (but deserved!) and a pick that “nobody will expect” for Howery in one of the most underrated sports movies of all time. “I didn’t realize I was going to love it as much as I did,” the actor says.

For the full list of faves from both actors, watch the video above. We Grown Now, written and directed by Minhal Baig, was nominated for three Film Independent Spirit awards and is in US theaters nationwide now.

Sasquatch Sunset writer-directors David and Nathan Zellner share their four favorite movies with Letterboxd.

From Japanese documentaries to grimy medieval times, Sasquatch Sunset writer-directors David and Nathan Zellner are leaving no stone unturned in their respective lists of four favorite movies.

Nathan goes for one “where the main character dies but you feel extremely hopeful”, somewhat speaking to the melancholy of their new silent movie. Just rabbits, instead of sasquatches.

The pair’s picks cover animation (“so bleak and beautiful”) as well as Gene Wilder comedies and a historical adventure story that has “an existential fever dream quality to it”. Shoutout to Werner Herzog.

“You just want to be in that place,” she says, before shouting out Stanley Donen and Audrey Hepburn for a third pick as the comfort movie slot. And taking us home, it’s Nicolas Roeg with a specific shoutout to “the beauty of the familiarity [of marriage]”.

Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny reflect on their collaboration and parallel cinematic journeys.

Kirsten Dunst felt an immediate kinship to Cailee Spaeny on Civil War: without realising the pair would soon have one more director than Alex Garland in common.

By the end of the shoot, Dunst had put in a good word with her longtime friend and collaborator Sofia Coppola, and on the last day of filming she greeted Spaeny with a flood of tears upon hearing she had been cast as Priscilla Presley in Coppola’s latest film.

It was The Virgin Suicides that made Spaeny want to even become an actor, while Spider-Man is one of the actor’s first cinemagoing memories. “It’s a really rare career she’s had,” Spaeny says of Dunst’s work, which she admires endlessly.

“I am very director-driven,” Dunst says, before discussing a Bergman classic that features in her four favorites while highlighting how well the Swedish filmmaker captures how “women are fascinating (...) and cinematic.”

For the full interview with the two stars above, watch the full video above for more on how one Coppola muse passed the baton to the other.

Civil War is in theaters around the world now. For more, watch Dunst and Garland give their four favorites alongside co-star Wagner Moura.

Four Favorites with the lead actors of Civil War, Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, and its writer/director Alex Garland.

Civil War writer and director Alex Garland acknowledges that Four Favorites may well be an on-the-spot thing, but he and his cast will give it a try anyway.

Kirsten Dunst kicks things off with a Wim Wenders all-timer and a Coppola classic, while Wagner Moura calls Italian neorealism “the best moment in the history of film”, dedicating two slots to Italian cinema.

Garland nods to a recent Oscar winner as one of his favorites, as well as a recent rewatch nodding to the almighty Bob Fosse. Moura hops over to the mighty greats of Brazilian cinema and Dunst shares some Bergman love.

The Civil War director rounds things off with what many have called the greatest anti-war film of all time, which he shared as homework for his cast. And if you’re wondering, we’ve got Cailee Spaeney’s four favorites right over here

Civil War is out in theaters around the world on April 12.

The People’s Joker writer, director and star Vera Drew shares her four favorite films with Letterboxd.

Drew kicks things off with the first movie she remembers being obsessed with, a sci-fi classic. “The veil between fantasy and reality was so thin for me, but I knew I couldn’t build a time machine,” she says. “It made me so excited about the things you could do with movies.”

Elsewhere, another mention in Drew’s four favorites prompts the filmmaker to declare David Lynch as a lesbian filmmaker (“The sapphic longing in it…”) and thank him for the “hot lesbian sex scene” she discovered at the age of fifteen.

A Paul Verhoeven pick gets us to number three, while a horrifying sequel takes us home and points to an enormous influence on Drew’s own movie.

Dev Patel walks us through the formative action movies he looked to when making his directorial debut with Monkey Man—while also detailing all the hurdles he had to overcome to release it.

When Dev Patel was a kid, he snuck downstairs and watched a Bruce Lee movie from behind the bannister and it changed his life. The Monkey Man filmmaker tells us about the formative action movies that made him and his debut feature in the video above.

“My room, every inch of wall space, it became Bruce Lee,” Patel says. Another Gareth Evans title changed what the action genre could even mean for the filmmaker, while Korean cinema perfected the art of the revenge film, he says.

In terms of Monkey Man, Patel explains how people’s roles had to change on set due to the pandemic. From production design to director of photography, the filmmaker was proud of how he got “an actual ninja” in one of his stunt crew to operate the camera.

Música co-writer-director-star Rudy Mancuso and his co-star Camila Mendes, unofficial Letterboxd Brazil representatives, have been thinking long and hard about their four faves.

For Mancuso, it goes back to his roots between his Brazilian mother and Italian father with two Oscar nominees, as well as a classic Scorsese nod and a wildcard Disney pick.

Mendes announces her “most cliche” answer up top as she is a “musical theater kid at heart” before sharing the love for Paolo Sorrentino, who Mancuso also vouches for. Elsewhere, Elizabeth Taylor (“another theater kid”) and Regina Casé round things off.

From Indiana Jones to staples in Italian cinema, Alice Rohrwacher details the influences she drew from to make her fantasy-adventure La Chimera.

Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher nods to the titans of cinema who raised her: that is, as much Indiana Jones as the greats including Fellini and Rossellini (father of one of her actors, Isabella).

“Of course, Indiana Jones is always an essential reference point,” Rohrwacher says of the impact of Raiders of the Lost Ark on La Chimera. “After watching that movie, we were taken over by the desire to go digging and searching.”

Elsewhere, the filmmaker encourages Letterboxd members to seek out Fellini’s Roma: “What I tried to do is present a scene [in my movie] about the unexpected discovery of a historical and mythological place.”
