"The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring one!"
some films provide their own review.
I WOULDNT SUCK YOUR LOUSY DICK IF I WAS SUFFOCATING AND THERE WAS OXYGEN IN YOUR BALLS!!!!!!
Went down a rabbit hole and watched (I think) every John Waters interview I could find on Youtube and even read a few chapters of his book ‘Shock Value’ thinking that’d prepare me for one of his films. That said, nothing can prepare you for your first John Waters film.
"If they're smart they're queer, and if they're stupid they're straight."
Heterosexuals never looked so disgusting.
“Have you met any nice boys in the salon?”
“They’re all pretty nice.”
“I mean any nice queer boys. Do you fool with any of ‘em?”
“Aunt Ida, you know I dig women.”
“Aw, don’t tell me that.”
“Christ, let’s not go through this again.”
“All those beauticians and you don’t have any boy-dates?”
“I don’t want any boy-dates.”
“Oh honey, I’d be so happy if you’d turn nelly.”
“Ain’t no way. I’m straight. I mean, I like a lot of queers but I don’t dig their equipment, you know? I like women.”
“But you could change! Queers are just better. I’d be so proud if you was a fag and had a nice beautician boyfriend. I’d never have to worry.”
“There ain’t nothin’ to worry about.”
“I worry that you’ll work in an office. Have children. Celebrate wedding anniversaries. The world of heterosexuals is a sick and boring life!”
Was lucky enough to see the new Criterion 4K restoration projected on the big screen at the Provincetown Film Festival. John Waters did a short q&a afterwards.
Love this film. And the restoration is gorgeous. So much detail in the image that it was like watching the film for the first time.
"Go fuck yourself!"
John Waters' affinity towards and kinship with so many marginalized communities makes it easy to want to sentimentalize his work, his characters, and the worlds he creates (disclaimer: Because I'm an affront to all that is truly good and decent about humanity, this is still the only Waters film I've seen, so take these remarks with the proverbial drop of liquid eyeliner), but on seeing this a second time I'm once again struck by how completely mercilessly and hilariously fanged it is, towards a violence-fetishizing media landscape but also more generalized targets like the narcissism and fame-obsession that landscape engenders, and the entirety of heterosexual society itself.
Somewhere along the line after this movie came out, along…
"I blew Richard Speck." - Dawn Davenport
If that line doesn't encapsulate the tastelessness, humor, and fabulousness of this film, nothing can.
“Everything sucks here. I'm going to Detroit to find happiness in the auto industry."
I haven’t watched this in years, popped in the new Criterion and YEP, still perfect. Melodramatic filth and I love it.
An absolutely assaultive viewing experience, just relentless - every frame crammed with retina-blasting clothing and wallpaper, every face uniquely hideous. All of Waters' movies are worthwhile, but this is the one where he said it all and said it best.
