Oh sinnerman, where you gonna run to…?

You must watch this. Now, if possible.

This is not a biography, a sports film, or a true-crime story. It’s much more than that. Orenthal James Simpson, who died earlier today, is utilized in this documentary as a conduit through which to examine the dark truths of race, fame, and justice in America. Beyond the rushing yards and the rental cars, the Bronco and the glove, is a story so exceptionally crucial to…

And I said to the voice, “why me?” And the voice said, “because you’re on television, dummy.”

Watching “Network” can be an eerie undertaking in 2024. Sidney Lumet’s crowning achievement should have been an omen to the American people in 1976; it became a playbook instead.

“Network” is a prophetic vision of entertainment and news merging into one, blurring the lines between truth and spectacle. It’s also the greatest satire in film history and the best journalism movie ever made.…

    La Chimera

“Those who work hard are full of woe. Those who don’t, make the dough.”

    Magical realism meets neorealism.

Rohrwacher evokes the pantheon of Italian cinema (Fellini would be wistful) and excavates our relationship with the past in this film about the merry Tombaroli (tomb raiders) of the Lazio countryside and their enigmatic capitano Arthur, an expat shrouded in mystery and longing. “La Chimera” is a dreamy fable about the history of art and the ghosts we unearth trying to recall that which…

    “You are all home now.”

Guerilla warfare. The Great EscAPE. APEocalypse Now. Stop me if I’m seven years too late on the puns.

These films don’t get nearly enough credit for having some of the most spectacular VFX of the 21st century. I wish other CGI-dependent franchises would apply half as much effort into their visual world building, texture, and character design.

Some aspects work better than others but Andy Serkis’ performance as the Messianic Caesar is among the most…

    Civil War

“Someone’s trying to kill us. We are trying to kill them.”

Visceral, propulsive, and upsetting. A film about the horrors of war and the breakdown of communication.

“Civil War” is certainly provocative, but not in the way you might expect. Garland doesn’t necessarily parse his film’s political mythology, much less the real contemporary landscape of American politics. He extricates the audience from the baggage of reality; it’s surprisingly alleviating, if not perhaps a little cowardly.

    I am concerned that people…

    Challengers

    “You need to start winning.”

    Kinetic, salacious, bitingly funny.

A film about the crossroads of lust and competition, about games within games.

Dynamic characterizations, acerbic back-and-forth rallies, clever framing, electric performances.

Reznor and Ross serve us pure heat.

Guadagnino is our foremost horny auteur (with apologies to the aging Brian de Palma).

Not sure Zendaya can credibly play A) a 30+ year old, or B) a Serena Williams type, given her distinct look (Serena is built like Saquon Barkley and…
