I don’t know. It’s a fine movie, I guess. The special effects are great. They’re clearly fake, but they look like someone’s memory of what happened, so they’re more effective. The monsters have a tactile scale to them that most modern movie monsters don’t. And the film is shockingly violent in a way most movies aren’t. Anyways, everything before Kong takes the screen is awful. The acting is truly terrible, and there’s too much exposition. The Peter Jackson movie actually develops the story well (yet also takes three hours), even if it’s wrong to forsake the look of this movie (and has some cuttable material).

The Empire Strikes Back 1980
On the one hand, this is a strong movie. On the other hand, it cuts around too often and isn’t very compositionally strong. And it helped kill New Hollywood, so I’m kind of vengeful about that. Still, the final duel scene is incredible.

Arrival 2016
There’s some great production design, sound design, and visual effects here. But awful, horribly underlit cinematography, bland characters, and a confusing storyline that only gets more idiotic when you research it.
EDIT: I’ve been told that Apple TV, on which I watched this, has a problem with dimness. My criticisms of the lighting still stand, but not as much.
