    Not as strong of a screenplay as I wanted, but I wouldn't say it's bad. Main character I felt needed a little bit less acting on suspicion and a little more stewing in paranoia for the final outburst to really work for me, but I suppose you run the risk of painting him as a martyr that way. He was a touch unlikable for me to really give into his neurosis.

    Full disclosure that I walked into this with a bias hoping that it would surprise me but it painted more or less the same picture that I was shown with the trailers. To be fair, it was better than I thought it would be, but not by much.

    I just really don't think its quirky magical realism tone really matches up with the emotional journey that Alejandro takes, and maybe I'm prejudiced because I've gone through the same thing he…

    A friend of mine maintains that you can’t make a movie about art school that is entertaining, and in a way I agree.

    Art College 1994 is hyper-specific, meandering, introspective and interesting, but I couldn’t call it entertaining. I think on its face it’s really difficult to engage with, but I personally found its meditations about art really truthful, if juvenile sometimes (but also, it’s art school, so I think juvenile navel gazing is kinda a given).

    I wish having varied queer representation (or I guess any rep at all) in mainstream animation didn't come with the monkey-paw caveat that it will be floating in a sea of insincerity, hollywood writing and unfunny quips.

    It looked nice, moved great, was atrociously paced, abysmally written, was amazing to see men kissing, had some of the worst needle drops since the mario movie.
