Carrie 1976
An operatic masterpiece seamlessly blending earnestness and camp while constantly subverting expectations. A deeply human film with an electric lead performance by Sissy Spacek. Her scenes with Piper Laurie are indescribable. Complete magic. De Palma’s direction is so confident throughout, but one of the few things holding the film back from perfection is the male gaze. The lingering, more or less sexualized shots of the female characters are deeply uncomfortable and the film would be better without it. Nevertheless, this film stands the test of time and gets better with each subsequent viewing.
