"Love" clearly meant something different in 1959 than it does today. Side note: I hope to one day be so swept up in telling someone a story that they need to slap me for the noise of the surrounding area to become audible again.
The film is a little melodramatic and pretentious for my taste, and touches on some great ideas but never really gets anywhere with them. Ultimately this film was surpassed by the Before Sunrise movies.
The farmer who invented an own-but-kicking machine is the comedian who won't go to therapy because what if he needs the sadness in order to be funny.
A fun movie thats 'quirky' style is less original than it should be and feels derivative and a bit bland. Any hint of satire is also overshadowed by "we've seen this before and that time it actually meant something". My favourite part was the last half hour where there was some interesting stakes and choices for the main character to make.
