there's no other film that captures with such brutal perfection what it is to be alive at this point in history. the complete and utter hopelessness of certain yet preventable doom; the spiritual and moral despair over what can be done; and the necessity of reaching outward despite that.

"do you realize what you're destroying?"
    "yes, of course."

made my heart feel full! also made me want to smoke cigarettes. renata reinsve and anders danielsen lie both give stunning, vulnerable performances. it's moving, but it's also irreverant and sharp. watching this made me feel how reading sally rooney does.

beautiful & heartbreaking in equal measure, and extremely enigmatic. loved it and want to see it again immediately. was lucky enough to see eiko ishibashi do a Q&A afterward, where she gave some very thoughtful commentary on her fantastic score.

i love stories about telling stories. and rashomon is a story about a guy telling a story about 3 other people telling stories. mifune's performance is deranged, but shimura's more understated role really impressed me. kurosawa is really good at making sweat seem oppressive.
