Letter from an Unknown Woman 1948
Has Europe - turn of 20th century classical Vienna - ever been so faithfully reconstructed and by Hollywood. Ophuls in America reconstructing the high culture setting of Stefan Zweig’s novel seems to be recreating a lovingly remembered newly lost culture. Joan Fontaine’s performance as the unknown woman is light but full of emotional depth conveyed largely through subtle shifts in her eyes whilst Louis Jordan is perfect as the self centred tragic pianist.
