Ophuls in America reconstructing the high culture setting of Stefan Zweig’s novel seems to be recreating a lovingly remembered newly lost culture. Joan Fontaine’s performance as the unknown woman is light but full of emotional depth conveyed largely through subtle shifts in her eyes whilst Louis Jordan is perfect as the self centred tragic pianist.
John Woo’s style overpowers making it feel like a poor imitation of Face-Off - all intricate plotting is given over to face off between Cruise / Butler whilst Anthony Hopkins & Brendan Gleeson both look uncomfortable wondering what the hell are we doing here.
Diverting light entertainment getting one over on London bankers - great that is based on true story . A modern day Ealing comedy without the nuance or sophistication.
