Several generations in the future following Caesar's reign, apes are now the dominant species and live harmoniously while humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. The manipulation of legacy and the price of progress— it’s fascinating how this franchise still manages to evolve in a direction that is both compelling and worth exploring even after half a century. Kingdom is a patient movie, maybe at times too patient, to the degree where the first half feels a bit aimless— a consequence of jumping “many generations”. Possibly it’s biggest pitfall is that the truly juicy tension is established in the final minutes of the movie leaving me feeling even more frustrated with the first half.
Regardless of my qualms, Kingdom is a breath of fresh air. Competent, looks incredible, and makes you actually care about characters and the world they occupy, which is more than I can say about other movies in this era of lackluster blockbusters.
It’s a bit of a mess, but a fucking cool, ferocious mess that I (surprisingly) had a really good time with. Still manages to build on the existing legacy while adding even more questions around modernisation, and the ability to co-exist. Flips the previous films on its head—a fun reversal where the apes are the dominant force, and, like us, struggle to learn the lessons of history. Visually, it's absurdly good. I've always said that I prefer to watch merely guys in ape suits, and that feeling remains unchanged, but wow—the motion capture in these films is so fucking good. Wes Ball has a little juice, looks good, great VFX. A little slow and long at 2:25. Feels like mostly an excuse to soft reboot back to the same old conflicts of the previous trilogy rather than move the franchise forward. I'll take it.

How fitting that the “Planet of the Apes” franchise continues to evolve, despite forever encircling the same inescapable themes of inhumanity — even in a post-human world — and the double-edged sword of technological advancement. Wes Ball’s lush and nuanced “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” might lack the epic sweep or revolutionary fervor of the recent Matt Reeves movies that salvaged this series from the stink that had been on it since 2001, but this well-honed adventure still manages to build on the best of their legacy, if largely because of its keen focus on the hard-fought lessons that have been forgotten from it.
