3 Essential HEREDITARY Scenes You'll Want to Re-Watch in IMAX https://letterboxd.com/imax/story/3-essential-hereditary-scenes-youll-want/ letterboxd-story-21791 Tue, 16 Apr 2024 04:03:55 +1200

For the last decade, A24 has been advocating for adventurous auteurs and championing the narratives no one else wanted to make.

Remind you of someone?

IMAX, the company that looked at OPPENHEIMER, (a complex and contemplative film about the most pivotal war machine ever invented) and said “summer blockbuster” -- has joined forces with A24 to bring back a diverse slate of titles in all-new remastered versions with enhanced visuals and sound. From last year’s PI anniversary remaster to STOP MAKING SENSE to our current bring-back series, ambition breeds ambition, and there are no more natural partners out there.

A match made in cinematic heaven, if you will.

The current series launched with the tenth anniversary of Adam Garland’s EX MACHINA, with HEREDITARY coming up next. Get hyped for the release by revisiting some of the most powerful scenes from the film that you'll definitely want to experience in IMAX.

Warning: Spoilers abound!

“I AM YOUR MOTHER!”

Ari Aster’s debut feature HEREDITARY hit cinemas in 2018. Made for $10 million, it went on to gross $82.8 million at the box office – not bad for a brooding family drama from a director who wasn’t quite a household name yet.

While Toni Collette demon-possessed and perched on an attic ceiling delivers huge scares every time, our vote for a scene that truly sings in IMAX is less directly action-packed, but no less adrenaline pumping.

After a freak accident results in Peter being responsible for the death of his sister Charlie, the grieving teen endures an intense dinner with his parents. Brimming with a sort of existential agony, the family quietly tries to carry on, but the pressure ultimately reaches a crescendo. What results is a fierce monologue by matriarch Annie, played by Collette. Feeding on fear, regret, and the looming, incurable sadness now plaguing their trio, she delivers a passionate performance that leaps off the screen when experienced in IMAX. Heartbreak, combined with a mother’s rage at the loss of not just one child, but in essence two, gains ever more power and prominence on IMAX screens.

THWACK!

It's a scene that just gets under your skin. In the flash of a second, you know the film’s world has changed for the characters in an irreparable way. After accidentally consuming nuts at a party, Charlie begins going into anaphylactic shock. As her brother races to the hospital, Charlie thrashes in the backseat, clutching her neck in a visceral moment of horror. But Aster doesn't let us off that easy.

A memorable enough moment the first time around, the infamous telephone pole scene reaches devastating new heights when experienced in IMAX. You may know it’s coming, but between the sound immersion and larger than life picture, you will truly feel inside of the universe of the movie. This is one of those scenes where the IMAX presentation really sings.  Or rather, terrifies.

The morning after the accident, the camera stays locked on a numb Peter in bed, as Annie screams outside. In the script, Aster describes it as "almost inhuman sounding." We cut to the roadside to see Charlie's decaying head, grotesque and riddled with bugs, as wails still reverberate. Amplifying the sheer wretchedness of what has happened, it's a choice that elevates the moment, saving the truly wicked parts for an impactful finish.

"A RAGING BALL OF FLAMES”

It’s hard to be the voice of reason in a universe built on insanity. For father Steve, played by Gabriel Byrne, it would be challenge enough to deal with everything happening to his family that's rooted in reality – death, his wife’s loosening grip on her mental state, a son who’s just busted his own face open. But then there’s all of the other stuff- seances, what he is pretty sure is his mother-in-law's headless body in their attic, and conspiracy theories about some sort of cult magic.

Expertly paced by Aster, in a sequence that lasts just under ten minutes, Steve brings home his injured son, discovers the attic corpse, and is subjected to his wife’s hysterics about the dark forces following them. His absolute final straw comes as Annie franticly pleads with him to burn Charlie’s sketchbook, something she hopes will take the evil away.

Disgusted, he coldly refuses, so a desperate Annie tosses the book into the fireplace herself. What we get next is described in the script as "A RAGING BALL OF FLAMES". In IMAX, rage it indeed does. The flickering bright orange-red tones are heightened and the sound of flames licking about Steve’s body amid his anguished cries boom through the cinema. You'll have renewed appreciation for the tension and release of this part of the movie; a signal that we’re really about to go off of the rails, so hold on for dear life.

Honorable mention:

The film’s score- you'll leave with new appreciation for its mood setting when you experience it in IMAX sound. Take special notice of the horns section during the climax- a nod to the mythos around Paimon, where the demon-king is said to be ushered in with the sound of trumpets.

HEREDITARY plays April 24th. Get your tickets here and bookmark the series page here to keep track of new titles as they are announced.

Love at First Frame: 7 Questions with IMAX Chief Quality Officers David & Patricia Keighley https://letterboxd.com/imax/story/love-at-first-frame-7-questions-with-imax/ letterboxd-story-18073 Sat, 4 Nov 2023 11:09:06 +1300

It was love at first frame for IMAX Chief Quality Officer David Keighley and his wife Patricia. As newlyweds in 1971, they found themselves on a date night at the Cinesphere in Toronto (the very first permanent IMAX installation of its kind), to catch a screening of the film NORTH OF SUPERIOR, directed by IMAX co-founder Graeme Ferguson. It was their first time seeing a film in the 1:43:1 aspect ratio. Overtaken by the immersion of this epic, super-sized image, they just knew they had to find a way to get involved.

From the third IMAX film onward, David eventually found himself working as a freelancer in production & post-production with the company. Shortly after these early collabs, he established 70MM Inc. to house these projects and quickly became the sole post-production provider for all IMAX Corporation films.

Our new, limited-edition merch drop pays homage to David, Patricia, and all of the talented film professionals who have contributed to the IMAX craft for the last half century (and counting!). The 70MM Inc. logo has graced pretty much every part of the hidden backend of the IMAX process- on film canisters, in the boxes that films were shipped in, etc. It’s a little-seen piece of IMAX heritage that you can now own and celebrate.

We sat down with the Keighleys to chat some insider IMAX history, their favorite movies, and the origin of the 70MM Inc. logo.

1. We are bringing back the logo of 70MM Inc., a company you founded, with a limited-edition capsule collection. It’s no secret that IMAX fans are passionate for the format – during OPPENHEIMER’S initial run, they were selling out 7 and 8 am shows in some locations! How do you feel about this enthusiasm for the format and our legacy?

IMAX 70mm film remains one of our biggest differentiators and it is gratifying to see audiences continue to respond so passionately. We heard several stories of fans who flew to another country to see OPPENHEIMER in one of the thirty 70mm IMAX film locations.

2. The logo. With its bold, blocky lettering, kind of feels almost like a badge of honor or quality seal for this game-changing format. We heard a rumor that its origins lie in a rough sketch you did on the back of a cocktail napkin. Can you tell us a little bit about how the idea came to you, and how it developed?

Yeah, that drawing was really quick. I'm always doodling something, so I think that's absolutely true. That wasn't the final version, but we handed it to a designer who put a more polished spin on it. But I did the block letters, and the designer integrated the "inc." If you go downstairs [to the film vault at IMAX headquarters] right now you'll probably see cannisters or containers with that logo still.

3. Speaking of 70mm, we are excited to be bringing back OPPENHEIMER in IMAX starting today in select theatres. The original roll-out for this film was as ambitious as the project itself, involving the coordination of a worldwide team of cinemas & projectionists to run 70mm showings of the film multiple times a day. Can you talk a little bit about getting that process up and running. What is it like to ensure audiences are getting the same experience, whether they are watching it in Calgary or Nashville?

To demonstrate how important IMAX film is to Chris Nolan, we hosted a kick-off call with all the projectionists in the 30 IMAX film locations. We were thrilled to share a video message Chris had recorded for this group about how important the projectionists were in the excellent presentation of the film and how much their efforts were appreciated.

4. You have worked on so many IMAX films, all truly unique and innovative. We know it must be a little like asking someone to pick a favorite child, but do you have a favorite project?

There is never a single favorite film. They are memorable in their own ways. Of course, OPPENHEIMER, but our documentaries propelled us to this point and influenced many filmmakers to explore the format. THE DREAM IS ALIVE, ROLLING STONES AT THE MAX, and HUBBLE 3D were all milestones. FANTASIA 2000, that started IMAX’s feature journey, the BATMAN trilogy, INTERSTELLAR and AVATAR have all been very important to the proliferation of the network around the world and audiences seeking the IMAX experience.

5. Can you share an interesting anecdote from the early days at IMAX? What was it like in the beginning?

People don't realize how shoestring IMAX was. Honestly the company was saved by a single broken camera at one point. In 1976, we were doing these camera tests with Bill Cole, a world acclaimed parachutist. [Cinematographer] Gerd Kurtz built us the rig and we took the IMAX camera (one of two in the world at the time) skydiving. We did a mock test that went well, so we went on to the real thing.

Bill jumped out. I was watching and shooting it with my 16mm camera. I would never have been a good newsman, because when I knew he was in trouble and I saw the camera plummeting, I had to break away and I thought he was going to die! He pulled his chute fast enough, that he lived but the camera smashed into the ground, pieces everywhere. I had the presence of mind to throw a black bag over the the film that had opened up out of the magazine and save whatever we could. We actually never used it in the movie-- this was a movie for Ontario Place Corporation.

So we wrecked the camera, but had we not gotten that insurance payout, we wouldn't have been able to make the payroll in that period.

So we we saved the company by destroying 1 of 2 IMAX cameras in existence at the time.

6. Do you have any advice for young people who may be reading this, and wondering how they can have a career in the cinema space? Are there any lessons you can impart for your own work & your own journey?

Watch as many films as you can, pick a discipline – or invent one, as we did – and work tirelessly, paying attention to the small details, without going overboard. Perfection is not attainable or affordable, excellence is – learn the difference. Take on any responsibilities offered as you will learn as much, or more, from those you don’t like as you will from those you more naturally gravitate towards. Learn as much as you can about the broader media landscape and how those evolving technologies may impact your future.

7. We love to ask this of our filmmakers, and we think the fans would love to hear your picks, too: if you could experience any movie again, for the first time, in IMAX, what would it be?

NORTH OF SUPERIOR, ROLLING STONES AT THE MAX, and OPPENHEIMER, all for different reasons.

The Keighleys currently serve as Chief Quality Officers at IMAX, a role they do not take lightly. In fact, any IMAX fan is welcome to email them with quality concerns or issues, and David himself will respond directly. No middleman or auto-reply bots here. Just real, human beings deeply passionate about film excellence.

IN CONVERSATION WITH ARTIST ADDIE ROANHORSE

1. Let’s start at the beginning. Your parents are also artists. What was it like to grow up in a home already surrounded by art? Did you always know you’d go into the “family business” so to speak, or did it take time for you to come to your own journey as an artist? What did you want to be when you grew up?

When you grow up as an artist's child, you are surrounded by all types of artists. As a child you tend to think this artist life is completely normal. Some of my first memories are of cleaning my mom's paint brushes and setting up for shows in galleries. My mother Gina Gray was a powerhouse, and I did happily live in her shadow because I knew this is what put food on the table. But I also witnessed firsthand the highs and lows of this lifestyle. When I decided to pursue art, I decided to go to college at an older age, and I received my Bachelor's degree in Fine Art with the emphasis on Graphic Design. I went that route because I knew that I could get a job fairly quickly, I am a single parent and needed my daughter to have stability. So overall my artist journey was approached in time and with my daughter in mind.

2. Speaking of familial ties, you’re a direct descendant of Henry Roan (portrayed by William Belleau in the film), making this story personally connected to you. What was it like to be involved in something like this, that not only impacted your community, but your family as well? What was it like to see this story told on the big screen?

The impact for our family has been immensely profound, we have grown up knowing this story and for people to finally listen and believe this true tragedy has made me feel heard.

3. A lot of moviegoers may not be familiar with this story, or the Osage Nation itself. What do you hope they can take away from the story? Can you speak at all about what impact you think experiencing the film in IMAX might bring to enhance their understanding of this little-known piece of history?

I hope this is the beginning of healing for our community, my family and myself. A tragedy like the Reign of Terror may be difficult for moviegoers to process, I hope they will have a better understanding of who we are and how we got here. We are resilient and have experienced immense trauma which is a strength I don’t think many can understand. Watching this film in IMAX is an experience, visually stunning and the music is so powerful. I think if you want the full experience, IMAX is where you want to be.

4. In addition to your role as Assistant Art Director, you also created some beautiful & impactful special artwork for the poster as well. What was it like to create a piece of art tied to another creative work? Did you approach it any differently than you might your other projects outside of the film? Can you talk a little bit about the art itself- how did you land on that final direction?

When I was approached to create the art, I was still fresh off of the film, so I still had all the energy with me. The color palettes still fresh in my mind, and knowing firsthand the amount of detail Marty expected, I approached the art with this mindset. I want the art to feel like a seamless partnership, using my experience working on the film was my approach.

5. Of course, we must ask: if there was one film you could experience all over again in IMAX, what would it be?

KUNDUN.

Shooting the Story: 7 Questions with Rodrigo Prieto, Cinematographer, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON https://letterboxd.com/imax/story/shooting-the-story-7-questions-with-rodrigo/ letterboxd-story-17673 Thu, 19 Oct 2023 07:00:00 +1300

'A Hot Blast of Sun'

Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto constantly impresses us. Garnering countless awards and honors throughout his career, including three Oscar nominations (for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, SILENCE, and THE IRISHMAN), he is the man behind the lens of some of the most iconic cinematic works of the post-millennium era. From films set in Hong Kong to Barbieland; from trailer parks to penthouses, from BC to AD, here on earth and lost in space, his career has touched it all.

Prieto is a frequent collaborator of director Martin Scorsese, in a relationship that began with WOLF OF WALL STREET. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is their fourth project together. We chatted with him about the chilling true story behind the film, his influences, and of course, IMAX.

1. Icebreaker: We’re learning that filmmakers have wildly different preferences about where to sit in an IMAX theatre. We’re of the opinion that there isn’t a right or wrong answer to this question. But where do you stand (or, rather, sit) on this topic?

For me, the sweet spot is roughly the middle of the theater. Of course, this depends on the size of the cinema, but I would say about 14 rows back, where your eyes are more or less at the center height of the screen. Also, it’s where it sounds best.

2. Going back to the beginning, what inspired you to become a cinematographer? How did you get here? What were some of your influences over the years?

My fascination with filmmaking started with movies that included stop motion, from JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, CLASH OF THE TITANS, to MIGHTY JOE YOUNG and KING KONG. My brother and I would make short 8mm horror and sci-fi films which included stop motion clay monsters. I loved the “make believe” part of making films: the trickery behind it. For me, cinematography is an extension of that playfulness, where you use the tools of the craft to fool the audience into believing that they really are in, for example, 1920’s Oklahoma. Or in Barbieland

3. And, back to today: KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON is the 4th film you’ve made with Martin Scorsese as a director of photography. Would you share a little bit about the working relationship between you? How is it different or the same from your working relationship with other directors?

Every director is different in their approach to storytelling. One of the things I love about my job is getting to work with such diverse artists and really do my best to get in sync with their perspective. I’ve loved Scorsese’s movies since I can remember being aware of the power of cinema beyond science fiction and horror. I was transfixed by his use of the camera as an emotional tool. The complex empathy with which he treats his characters is amazing to me, and the way he places the camera to capture this is simply masterful and mysterious. It has been a dream come true for me to collaborate with him and help execute his vision. As the years have passed, I am more aware of what he might respond to when setting up a shot. I guess I now get approval of the shots I present to him more often than I did at the very start! The most exciting part of it all is listening to him explain his ideas and figuring out the best way to achieve them.

4. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON chronicles a complex story, rooted in reality. How did you go about approaching the visual language of their world? What sort of things do you think about when approaching the look & feel of a film?

Even though the story is based on true events, I think one of the characteristics of our approach is the exploration of how real stories are represented. From the black and white newsreel shots (that were done with Scorsese’s own 1917 Bell and Howell camera) all the way to the Radio Show epilogue where actors retell the story in a very biased 1930’s interpretation. The movie itself is obviously a representation and interpretation of those same events. So, I decided to explore how people at that time saw images from other places and how events were recorded. I studied the first explorations into color photography and ended up creating a LUT (Look Up Table) that emulates “Autochrome,” which is a color technique invented by the Lumiere Brothers in France in 1917. I used this LUT for every scene in the first half of the film that involved the descendants of European Settlers. So, Hale and Ernest’s story is seen through the “filter” of Autochrome, in contrast to the scenes where we see the Osage without white people around them. For these scenes, we stuck to naturalistic color, using a LUT that emulates film negative as seen on film print. We also shot on film negative, which I find gives us the most color depth, and richest nuanced colors for the Oklahoma landscapes and to represent the connection of the Osage to nature.

About two thirds into the film, a tragic event happens, and the look changes to a harsher feel. We switched to a LUT that emulates ENR print technique, with desaturates colors and adds contrast. The lighting also becomes harsher and with deeper shadows. In several instances I used overexposure to accentuate the discomfort Ernest feels from his own mounting sense of confusion and guilt.

5. Two questions: What is your favorite scene in KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON? Are there any behind-the-scenes stories you can share about shooting that scene?

There are many favorite moments in the movie for me. One of them is the whole sequence where Hale is burning the land around his ranch to collect insurance money. The effect of that fire seems to envelop everything, like Hell has taken over, with William Hale presiding over it like some sort of Lucifer. The scene of the burning of the land includes some long lens tight shots of Hale’s ranch hands controlling the fire. We had small flame bars close to the lens to create some heat distortion, but the additional distortion caused by the more distant fire created a surreal image that was mesmerizing while shooting it. Scorsese just kept the cameras rolling as we were all transfixed by the strange shapes that resulted.
Another favorite of mine is Ernest’s cross examination at the witness stand in court. I lit him with an uncomfortable hot blast of sun, and most of the scene is just a medium shot of him as he answers questions. His performance is just incredible. Very powerful and moving.

6. What is your favorite bit of the IMAX Experience? And why should fans experience KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON in IMAX?

IMAX is truly immersive. As a cinematographer, I always strive to put the audience in the middle of the scene, trying to create images that somehow resonate emotionally. The enveloping nature of the big IMAX screen helps the viewer forget that they are watching a movie and let themselves be fully taken into the experience.

Killers of the Flower Moon is an intimate story of a specific family, but the backdrop of the story is huge. Not only the vastness of the Oklahoma Landscape, but the countless murders of Osage people due to the wealth generated from the oilfields on their land. IMAX enhances the delicate nuance of the great performances of the actors, while providing us with a big canvas to feel the impact of the epic scale of the story.

7. You’ve worked with some of the most respected directors – Gerwig, Stone, Iñárritu, Almodóvar, and both Lees (Ang & Spike). You’ve also worked with some of the most acclaimed musical artists – Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, as well as Travis Scott. Are there any commonalities in how you approach working with these visionaries? What is it about you, or your approach to filmmaking, that allows you to successfully straddle these two worlds?

My approach is always the same when it comes to working with different directors. And it starts with listening. I really pay close attention to what a director says, to me or any other collaborator. It’s a deep form of attention, where I focus not only in the words, but also the energy of the way they express their ideas. From this deep listening, images come to my mind, sometimes from literal descriptions from the director, but also just from the way I emotionally interpret what is being said. I try to facilitate a bond of trust, where we can play with ideas freely, without any judgement or preconceived notions of mine. Each project has its own personality and vibe, which is generated from the director. I just try to capture that to the best of my abilities.

Does the ‘Fart Opera’ actually exist? What will you see in the IMAX-exclusive, BARBIE post credit footage? https://letterboxd.com/imax/story/does-the-fart-opera-actually-exist-what-will/ letterboxd-story-17110 Fri, 22 Sep 2023 06:00:03 +1200

"Very sophisticated. You need to see it in IMAX!" - that's director Greta Gerwig's take on why you should experience BARBIE with never-before-seen post-credit bonus footage in IMAX. We sat down with her and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto to chat about bringing the World of Barbie to our larger-than-life screens, their favorite films, and yes, the fabled "fart opera" sequence, (which actually exists, and can only be viewed during our week-long IMAX engagement).

See exclusive footage of THE CREATOR and Live Q&A with director Gareth Edwards https://letterboxd.com/imax/story/see-exclusive-footage-of-the-creator-and/ letterboxd-story-16575 Wed, 23 Aug 2023 09:27:08 +1200

Gareth Edwards started his career with the 2010 indie sci-fi film MONSTERS, where he served as not only director & writer, but also visual effects artist, production designer, and cinematographer. Since then, the multi-talented filmmaker has gone on to give us the 2014 GODZILLA reboot and most famously, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (where he also had a small cameo as a rebel soldier).

His new film THE CREATOR reunites him with ROGUE ONE scribe Chris Weitz, in a breathtaking return to the science fiction space. The film tells a timely story about a future where humans are at war with artificial intelligence.

Of course an adventure this epic needs to be experienced in IMAX. That's why we're giving fans in 10 cities across North America a chance to be the very first to see footage from the new film as well as enjoy a special interactive Q&A with Edwards, broadcasted live from Los Angeles. And the best part? It's free. Reserve your passes here, and we'll see you at the movies on August 29th.

Shooting the Story: 5 Questions with Hoyte van Hoytema, Cinematographer of OPPENHEIMER https://letterboxd.com/imax/story/shooting-the-story-5-questions-with-hoyte/ letterboxd-story-15836 Tue, 1 Aug 2023 08:39:26 +1200

A four-time collaborator with director Christopher Nolan, cinematographer Hotye van Hoytema is no stranger to shooting for IMAX. With an over 25-year career, you’ve seen his work in films like NOPE, DUNKIRK, INTERSTELLAR, and HER among numerous others. Most recently, he joined us in innovating for OPPENHEIMER, being the first ever DP to shoot on IMAX black & white film. Ever. Read on for his insider take on the tech, the challenges of shooting big, and experiencing stories in IMAX.*

1. WHAT’S IT LIKE FILMING UP-CLOSE DIALOGUE SCENES WITH AN IMAX FILM CAMERA?

It’s very intimidating for the actors at first. If you're not an IMAX veteran, the sound can be a new element on the set. Very often we shoot dialogue scenes. We shot it with a dialogue appropriate camera, which in the case of OPPENHEIMER, is the System 65 studio camera. It’s quiet so the actors can play out their scenes, they can hear, they can hone their performances. But very often if we really want that scene on IMAX, which we almost always do, after we have done all the takes and it has become muscle memory and it's within the blood of the actors, we do several takes on IMAX and at that moment you know the actors have their own prior performances to lean back on.

2. HOW DO YOU APPROACH SHOTS FOR IMAX’S EXPANDED ASPECT RATIO?

IMAX is much more vertical but because of the proximity of watching something in an IMAX theatre the way you perceive frames is very different. You are sort of forced to think in a more visceral way to experience a frame. If you sit far away from a screen, you can look at a frame and you can be very analytical about it. You can very easily notice that the frame is sort of heavily weighted to the left or to the right, has a lot of negative space. Whereas if you sit very close to a screen and it's above you, on your left side, and to your right side, that sort of intellectual awareness of the frame doesn't really exist. So, it becomes much more about what you see in the center, what's close, what is sharp, and what remains in your peripheral vision.

3. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE BLACK AND WHITE IMAX FILM?

They initially said, “well, we don't know, but we sure can try.” After a couple of months, they managed to come with two boxes of IMAX 70MM film stock with a double emulsion over it and we started testing it. We started to learn that it was not all that easy. That's kind of where our black and white adventure started. We had to re-engineer the cameras a little bit. The transparency of the of the backing layer of the black and white film and the light that bounces back, you get all these weird light artifacts when you run black and white film through the camera. So, IMAX created different film gates for the camera for us.

4. HOW DID THE BLACK AND WHITE SCENES LOOK ON SCREEN?

We shot tests and had Robert Downey Jr and Cillian Murphy there. We shot portraits of them and watched them on the screen, and it was absolutely mind blowing for us. I've never seen anything like it.

5. HOW DID YOU SHOOT THE EXPLOSION SCENES, LIKE THE TRINITY TEST?

We’re always at safe distances. Then there's of course the miniature version of doing what we do. It's doing things out in the desert. You know scale becomes a very abstract understanding, so by combination of focal lengths and sizes of your exposure you can create illusion of size. Safe distances, forced perspective, and clever cutting I would say.

Screenings of OPPENHEIMER in IMAX have been extended until August 17th. View new showtimes near you.
