    I love indie films -- all of them, basically -- so if I'm watching, I'll find ways to like the story. But I'm not the person you want to win over; it's my wife.     Let's start with the praise: it is beautifully made. The work of Avatar's technicians and editors is astounding. Almost all of the film looks to be made in front of a green screen, so credit the actors for never reminding you of that. The bones of it are magnificent, as so many reviews mention. And that's enough for 2.5 stars.

    If you told me you have a meditative character study, gorgeously shot in what looks like Ireland, sign me up for tickets. And "The Banshees of Inisherin" is as advertised.

    It deals with difficult topics such as male friendship; kindness versus weakness (if they are even opposed); father and son; brother and sister; the Irish Civil War, and more. And in a film where a guy is removing his own fingers, it doesn't come across as...heavy handed. It bothers me…
