Hawke family innocent! Yes, it was directed by Ethan Hawke, led by Maya Hawke, and produced by 3 Hawkes, but I still love them I don't care.
The cold cinematography and stuffed cast were enough to provide some intrigue. When you have stars like Liam Neeson and Cooper Hoffman delivering mere minor supporting roles on top of committed performances from Laura Linney and Maya Hawke, it is hard to not be captivated by what unfolds. However, the delivery of several Flannery O'Connor short stories being woven together to tell this ultimate narrative of the publishing of her first novel made for an increasingly disjointed and frustrating experience.
Much like 2022's Emily , the level of enjoyment and absorption one will get out of Wildcat comes down to one's familiarity and consumption of Flannery O'Connor, and for me, that is less than minimal.
I didn’t really care or think about this movie except Ethan Hawke is directing this, and Maya Hawke is starring in this. I was very interested to see what this would be especially being a fan of his work. I can say I had a solid time with this and it was cool to see him in the directors chair! Maya Hawke is a god damn star! I am so happy she’s getting all the roles. While I wasn’t big on this movie I can very much appreciate for what this was. I would recommend this to anyone especially huge Ethan Hawke fans. I’m curious to see what everyone thinks of this.

Ethan Hawke clearly poured a lot of love into WILDCAT. Maya Hawke’s gives a fascinatingly complex performance & the cool-toned cinematography is often striking. However, they’re weakened by the fragmented use of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories & often bizarre, borderline incoherent dialogue.

This is a very interesting way to tell a story about an author, one that I fear will end up alienating some. It's obvious Ethan Hawke has a great appreciation for Flannery O'Connor, and he tells this story of her trying to write her first novel by interweaving her short stories into the main story. This means that there is a lot of jumping around, a lot of actors playing multiple roles, and sudden shifts in what is going on. It simply won't work for everyone, happy to say it did work for me though.
As Flannery writes these short stories, to distract herself from writing the novel, she incorporates people and events from her life…
haven’t read enough flannery o'connor & don’t know enough about her to have a strong sense of if this is a good portrayal or not but enjoyed the way it blends flannery‘s fictional characters with her persona smoothly
the pacing is little wack and don’t like the ending but overall pretty good
