The platform was started in 2013 by three directors to showcase the classics, a niche left open by the Netflix's of this world. To curate the platform they ask fellow directors to submit a list of about 50 films to include on the platform. Only films mentioned in one of the lists get added to the platform. A new director is invited at least once a month.

- A director cannot include his/her own films, but is of course free to chose films from other directors participating.
At the moment there are 132 lists of participating directors, for a complete listing see the LaCinetek website. There are four directors included posthumously, that left behind a list in earlier publications: Chantal Akerman, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa and François Truffaut. These are marked as 'Les films de leur vie' on the site.
This list is an attempt at cataloguing all films mentioned. Films with the most mentions at the top, films with an equal number ordered as encountered. See the notes for the name(s) of the director that added the film.
* LaCinetek provides collections of shorts for things like early Charlie Chaplin. When the site lists the included films, the films are added individually. In the case this is not listed, one example is used and there is a clarification in the notes.
