I've seen few reviews for the somewhat generically titled In The Land Of Saints And Sinners. If the reason for that's believing it's just the latest super mediocre Liam Neeson action flick I wouldn't blame you, but...
YOU'D ALSO BE WRONG! THIS WAS SURPRISINGLY GOOD! ONE OF THE BEST FILMS NEESON'S DONE IN YEARS!
Performance and character wise Neeson isn't really challenging himself, he's doing what he's been doing for the past decade, he could play this role in his…
Films either set in Scotland or Ireland, or indeed any part of the UK where a regional dialect is used can be a tricky proposition for a director. That quest to add authenticity to a story, and if it's a period piece, the pressure to capture the look, the fashions, and the aesthetic of the times becomes paramount. Director Robert Lorenz is an American producer and director, but you'd hardly know it from the pinpoint casting, language and dialogue, and…
Set during the time of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, this revenge thriller isn't especially novel in its plot. But it's enhanced by the setting - a small coastal village in the County Donnegal and its inhabitants who become part of the story - and a cast of great contemporary Irish actors. it was quite enjoyable and I have a soft spot for good Irish cinema.
Liam Neeson - back on his home turf - plays Finbar a longtime village…
There are some genuinely A+ bits in this, gentle physical comedy, all stemming from the fumbling hospitality of good intentions. A really nice little movie, four stars!
A nicely small film with some lovely small moments but a very big heart. It's gentle, sweet, and quietly sad look at the awkward cultural clash, loneliness, alienation and how fleeting but deep connections we make sometimes. The good stuff.
The Band's Visit follows in a tradition of films that target historical enemies, trying to show how there is an undercurrent of humanity between them and that conflict is ultimately pointless; most of these films feel almost insipid, usually melodramatic and almost always inauthentic. However, this Eran Kolerin film is the opposite - it builds up a series of well-rendered characters (often through minimal dialogue) and creates a commentary on their shared experience with loneliness, tragedy, and custom through candid,…
Michael Shannon was perfect in this role, heard all too often as he incredible in most things, a notorious contract killer loosely based on Richard Kuklinski The Iceman is a dark, bleak crime film, stacked heavily with large talent, with zero bum notes to be seen. A truly engaging story from start to finish, with terrific pacing, excellent camerawork and marvelous direction. I loved this film.
The incredible but true life story of Richard Kuklinski, one of America's most prolific serial killers who channeled his "talent" into working as a hit-man for the mob.
Conventional but extremely well made biopic about a fascinating individual and his extraordinary exploits. Ariel Vromen doesn't shake the boat stylistically but presents Kuklinski as a three-dimensional human being, not a soulless ogre, making it easier for us to understand the man and his motivations. And all that without glossing over his…
