“I don’t know why people expect art to make sense. They accept the fact that life doesn’t make sense.”
Born in 1946 in Missoula, Montana, Lynch was raised in small-town America. After high school, he went to Boston to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Then, following a stint in Philadelphia, he moved to Los Angeles where he launched his film career. While working at the AFI Conservatory, Lynch created his first motion picture, Eraserhead.
Since 1977, cinema screens have been blessed with the bizarre, dreamlike films of the industry’s most important director. Spanning over 50 years, Lynch’s wide filmography has covered everything from true life stories, to epic space operas. One thing however has remained consistent, his love for the weird and wonderful.
Over a lengthy career, Lynch has employed a distinctive, unorthodox (and now known as "Lynchian") approach to narrative filmmaking that has become instantly recognisable to many audiences and critics worldwide.
Throughout 2024, we will be screening all 10 of his feature films, all the way from his debut Eraserhead to his final 2006 film Inland Empire. Additionally, we will also be screening a collection of his short films as well as the acclaimed documentary The Art Life.
