Lily Gladstone gives one of the most important performances of the decade. Leonardo DiCaprio gets spanked. Thank you Martin Scorsese.

I speak for all mediocrities in the world. I am their champion. I am their patron saint.

Watched the 3 hour director’s cut! Wow. I see the scene where Salieri and Mozart are composing the funeral march sort of the same as Pacino and De Niro’s first meeting in Heat. They’d obviously interacted dozens of times before, but never so intimately or with such truth, like they were actually meeting for the first time. In another life they might’ve been friends. Maybe they already were!

  • The Good Nurse

    The Good Nurse

    ★★★

Fun fact of the day kids, this was produced by Darren Aronofsky! I also went in blind and had no idea it was about real life serial killer Charles Cullen and not just some nurse drama. It’s a decent enough watch, nothing grating about it besides some clumsy writing but nothing very novel or electrifying either. It’s carried by the two lead performances from Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, who play an excellent earnest single mother and creepy weirdo respectively. If you’re into this kind of thing, it’s worth the watch.

    Bohemian Rhapsody

Had only ever seen this in bits and pieces - holy shit, it’s even worse than I thought. Terrible from a filmmaking perspective but mostly just a disgraceful portrayal of a man and band I love dearly. Yikes

  • Elvis

    Elvis

    ★★★★

A dazzlingly eclectic albeit (unsurprisingly) shallow odyssey of one of the most beloved performers of all time. Expect the Baz Luhrmann special - aggressively frenetic editing and a flashy stylistic choice made whenever possible (one man’s trash - I loved it). Some sequences in here are absolutely bonkers and intoxicating, full on goosebumps for five minutes, partially from Baz but ultimately because Austin Butler gives an Oscar-worthy performance that you swear is the real thing in certain moments. The highs…

    ★★★½

Will Smith was the one getting punched in this movie that’s how you know it’s acting

Sweet! Mostly works as a character study. He’s clearly a narcissist, it’s interesting to think about what can come from that and at what cost. Was a bit too long. Aunjanue Ellis and Saniyya Sidney are beautiful! I cried at the credits when they were showing clips of Venus and Serena, not during the movie. The Beyoncé song slaps, and was robbed of an Oscar. Those women really are a revelation.

    ★½

This is the hardest I’ve ever had to work to get through a movie, I think it took me 5 or 6 sittings? And it’s not because the subject isn’t interesting, it’s because I watched it after The Big Short and Don’t Look Up. I’ve finally seen enough that I don’t really find value in McKay’s perspective here. He truly is a smug SOB lol and his transition into these quasi docu-dramadies is so strange. Hollywood’s obsession with them is…

Who can count how many times I say camp in this video

TL;DW: It’s camp, but I also found it to be a little boring. Jared Leto is easily the funniest part and Lady Gaga did not come to fuck around. The strange needle drops and clashing tones will 100% put people off - but I personally was just fascinated by it and ended up liking it overall. Not Ridley’s best but good!

    ★★★

There are so many great films for women this year!!!

Spencer is a film that I appreciate more than I personally love. It’s slow, there were a few scenes I had to hang in for, but Pablo Larraín never leaves you without something to look at or think about. The cinematography is stunning, as are the set pieces and costume design. Jonny Greenwood has yet to disappoint with his compositions and his score here utilizes jazz and beautiful piano, but…

  • The Eyes of Tammy Faye

    The Eyes of Tammy Faye

    ★★★★

The Eyes of Tammy Faye got a round of applause from my theater once the screen went black, and the movie was great, but it was clear that we were clapping for Jessica Chastain. I was expecting something incredible from her but wow.

The story of Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker is wild in every sense of the word. From a humble and well-intentioned beginning to a corrupt and greed stricken televangelist empire, they are the definition of ‘what goes…

  • Outlaw King

    Outlaw King

    ★★★½

I don’t usually find myself drawn to historic biopics like this but I liked The King and certain parts of The Last Kingdom, plus I love Hell or High Water so I wanted to see more of Mackenzie’s work. I think he is a great director and that this movie is underrated.

The biggest issue it has is the pacing - the beginning moves through too many events too quickly for you to care, which I imagine is the result…
