“Everything extraordinary can be explained away, and yet it is true.”

    M. Night’s call to arms. Go forth ye weirdos, for you are not the burden you’ve been convinced you are, but a beautiful gift.

    “I wasn’t a mistake, mama.”
    “No. You were spectacular.”

    It’s the army, we’re safe!

Funny as fuck and a misunderstood gem. This is very obviously a satire, and a good one at that, but people have been so brainwashed into thinking M. Night is some incompetent moron that it’s often reduced to how the dialogue and acting come across to someone who doesn’t want to look beyond it. Are we not bored of saying that? This is so fascinatingly deadpan and goofy while pointing out post 9/11 paranoia as…

A movie about not giving into anger and how old people are terrifying :)

I hadn’t seen this since it came out and kind of dismissed it as one of M. Night’s more conventional films that I was lukewarm on, and it’s still not a personal favorite but I guess I forgot that it is as tonally eclectic as anything he’s done. Oddball found footage horror that is dark as often as it is really funny and gross. I also completely forgot about both the twist and sentimental core. The two kids absolutely kill it. This is a good one.

A movie about believing in fairytales :)

Another one that gets better on every rewatch. M. Night has said that he believes if he makes the most distinct thing, that truly represents him, it will resonate more with audiences over time. Even so it’s kind of unfathomable to me that people think this movie is worthless, something this imaginative and hopeful and risky, with his usual formal mastery, but I know the other side thinks the same of my unusually high…

A movie about a dad believing in his son :)

Yeah, I’d like to prioritize my integrity as a critic over my M. Night bias and I unfortunately don’t fall into the “this is great, actually” camp but it is not as bad as you people say!! It has a bigger heart than most blockbuster fare, that’s probably its best asset, but I just don’t think this man is fit for large scale, populist cinema. He specializes in contained, subtle…

A movie about a community believing in love :)

This gets better on every watch. As stage play as M. Night has ever been, and as begging as his themes have ever been, for us not to give up on the world or each other. I am constantly in awe of just how evergreen his approach to American self preservation is, here through a community who have turned their backs to the kindness in humanity, only to realize they have not…

    Fucking GOATED.

Haley Joel Osment was 10 years old acting like a grown ass man who had decades of trauma to work through. Truly the best child acting of all time.

I hadn’t watched this in a while but I think it’s staying right where it is on my M. Night ranked

*trigger warning: I take an M. Night movie too seriously*

“Everything extraordinary can be explained away, and yet it is true.”

    M. Night’s entire filmography is pretty much about believing. He likes to confront us with alternate realities that resemble our own and ask, “what if this were true?”. In Signs he asks us if we believe in miracles, in Lady in the Water we get swept up in a fairytale, and in the third installment of his grounded and…
