They see what they’ve been told to see

I hope Denis Villeneuve cries with joy every night because he made this, as good as a cinematic adaptation could be of every spiritual, cosmic, environmental, political, cultural layer of probably the densest sci fi text ever created. This was my 6th time watching it, fourth time in theaters, and it hasn’t lost an ounce of its impact. They showed Paul’s first sandworm ride at the IMAX exclusive sneak peak and I…

    Shazam! Fury of the Gods

    ★★½

Better than Quantumania and Black Adam but not as good as the first film - it helps that they’ve laid the groundwork with this very likable family because they got sloppy in other ways. The humor is worse, it’s lit like shit, the villains are a huge missed opportunity and the second act is a mess. They rely almost exclusively on people being stupid to push this plot forward - I’m getting progressively more annoyed with how childish Billy acts as…

HOW DO THEY KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!! In a world where it no longer seems possible for every movie in a franchise to be a banger, Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski emerge from the shadows, ghostly silhouettes in black suits, and say “shhhh it’s okay. We have more dogs and Donnie Yen. We also did that overhead tracking shot you wanted, and made our universe’s version of Daredevil and the Penguin. You will see old favorites, and be introduced…

Seen in IMAX! :) gets better every time, so much to notice. I LOVE the way Spielberg shoots conversations in this. His blocking for these scenes makes all his films feel so alive and dynamic but I think it’s especially magical here because it’s against the backdrop of a vast, now threatening ocean. He creates these little bubbles for his characters that retain intimacy and warmth in a setting that otherwise just swallows them up. It’s the contrast between these spaces/the…

  • Nope

    Nope

    ★★½

This is the hardest rating I’ve had to give this year (I go into more detail in my second review). Peele’s films seem to be becoming increasingly aware of themselves, and what I was hoping would be a tight homage to beloved sci-fi iconography, with his usual layered commentary, in my experience was a jumbled mess of ideas and derivative thrills. There’s so much he’s getting at here that is great on its own, and is great to analyze after, but I…

    Translation:
I had fun! But mostly because of the meme of it all. My theater was pretty tame compared to the stories I’m hearing but people were cheering and it got a round of applause at the end lol. The movie itself is totally fine, fans of the minion-verse will love it, it’s…

Oh hell ya. Worked for me on almost every level. Excruciatingly jarring. Camerawork is delightfully experimental if sometimes classically Bay headache-inducing. Couple of shots that made my jaw drop. Ridiculously over the top and thrillingly rugged. Mind blowing practical effects and drone footage. Yahya, Jake, and queen Eiza were stellar. I have SO MUCH TO SAY. VIDEO SOON.

California dreamin’ indeed lads. Look closely and you will see Jake Gyllenhaal’s stunt double!

  • The Matrix Resurrections

    The Matrix Resurrections

    ★★★★½

The divisiveness of this film is happening before our very eyes, which is the only realistic outcome when such a beloved and influential franchise gets a reboot into the world of 2021. It’s a hard pill to swallow (ha), but The Matrix was destined to never be left alone, and it might be the perfect tool to simultaneously contribute to and critique the current blockbuster landscape.

I think it’s unfair to expect a fourth film to tread entirely new ground,…

Trying to get settled in DC still but wanted to get some thoughts in! video review here

TL;DW: The Shakespearean language is something to get used to, but Joel Coen created a surreal noir that is hauntingly atmospheric and tense (with a touch of humor). Incredible score, sound design, and cinematography that finds the perfect balance between set and cinema. Bruno Delbonnel is a mastermind. Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington are as captivating as you’d expect, but Kathryn Hunter was the…

If you saw this video before I deleted/reuploaded it because I made a mistake no you didn’t 👁👄👁

TL;DW this was a quick one because I simply had a blast with Ghostbusters: Afterlife and that’s all there is to it! I thought Jason Reitman did a great job honoring the original series and serving fans while introducing new characters and bringing Ghostbusters to a new generation. It did become a rehash of the first film going into the third act and that…

  • Eternals

    Eternals

    ★★½

I accidentally made this video more about Marvel and Eternals as a whole oops but it’s there! And it’s way too long but I guess that’s fitting

TL;DW: I think Eternals suffers from similar issues to Wonder Woman 1984 in that it’s too long, convoluted, and attempts to juggle more than it needs to. It absolutely has its moments with the characters/action, but the writing is poor, there are too many characters, and the visuals are good but not good enough to justify its $200 million budget.

Now pls no one talk to me about this movie ever again
