    The Matrix Resurrections

    ★★★★½

The divisiveness of this film is happening before our very eyes, which is the only realistic outcome when such a beloved and influential franchise gets a reboot into the world of 2021. It’s a hard pill to swallow (ha), but The Matrix was destined to never be left alone, and it might be the perfect tool to simultaneously contribute to and critique the current blockbuster landscape.

I think it’s unfair to expect a fourth film to tread entirely new ground,…

  • Nightmare Alley

    Nightmare Alley

    ★★★½

    "No man can outrun God."

I went into Nightmare Alley expecting a dark noir, but what I got was also a damning and cynical dissection of the human psyche. Stanton Carlisle is a con man, put simply. He knows that it is human nature to lie to ourselves and believe what we want to hear, so he exploits that to its fullest extent - then takes it off the brink. While this character study doesn't nearly live up to the likes…

I could go into heavy detail. And I will! I will go into heavy detail!

Mannn I can’t believe we are finally getting this film. I’ll save my rewatch log for a video, but biggest takeaway: Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman. Jesus Christ. How did PTA make me literally feel the feelings of being in love in the summer. I cried twice in the movie when nothing was happening. Just because the whole thing is so beautiful. Damn funny too!

Time to blast Life on Mars? and romanticize these rat infested New York streets

  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife

    Ghostbusters: Afterlife

    ★★★½

If you saw this video before I deleted/reuploaded it because I made a mistake no you didn’t 👁👄👁

TL;DW this was a quick one because I simply had a blast with Ghostbusters: Afterlife and that’s all there is to it! I thought Jason Reitman did a great job honoring the original series and serving fans while introducing new characters and bringing Ghostbusters to a new generation. It did become a rehash of the first film going into the third act and that…

    The French Dispatch

Finally got to the theater for this!! Y’all weren’t kidding, obviously it was known that his style would be in overdrive but it was somehow even more aggressively Wes Anderson than I thought it would be. And as someone who is a fan but not an avid fan of his work, I loved it!!

I’m so impressed by how much of a busy and dynamic production this crew pulled off with only $25 million. Yet another stunning twee dollhouse quirk…

  • Eternals

    Eternals

    ★★½

I accidentally made this video more about Marvel and Eternals as a whole oops but it’s there! And it’s way too long but I guess that’s fitting

TL;DW: I think Eternals suffers from similar issues to Wonder Woman 1984 in that it’s too long, convoluted, and attempts to juggle more than it needs to. It absolutely has its moments with the characters/action, but the writing is poor, there are too many characters, and the visuals are good but not good enough to justify its $200 million budget.

Now pls no one talk to me about this movie ever again

  • Spencer

    Spencer

    ★★★

There are so many great films for women this year!!!

Spencer is a film that I appreciate more than I personally love. It’s slow, there were a few scenes I had to hang in for, but Pablo Larraín never leaves you without something to look at or think about. The cinematography is stunning, as are the set pieces and costume design. Jonny Greenwood has yet to disappoint with his compositions and his score here utilizes jazz and beautiful piano, but…

    Eternals

Considering all of the resources Marvel has to make a genuinely good movie, this is a very disappointing outing. I was fighting for my life in that theater lol. I have tickets to see it two more times so if I survive I’ll do a vid sometime soon. Druig and Makkari are cool

  • Last Night in Soho

    Last Night in Soho

    ★★★

Last Night in Soho is some of Edgar Wright’s most ambitious and experimental work to date. Unfortunately for me, it didn’t live up to its intriguing premise. His usual style of putting an outlandish twist on a more conventional coming of age/feel good story works best when it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and tones do more than just clash in this mixture of fantasy and reality. The first half excels in its pursuit of pure horror/thriller madness, but once…
