• Madame Web

    Madame Web

I’ve endured worse than staring at Dakota Johnson for 2 hours but she, and miss Madame Web who is actually a pretty cool hero, deserve a tiny bit better than this botched specimen. The end is so catastrophically bad I nearly had to watch through my fingers. Also I’m laughing because part of this is kind of Dune Messiah coded, iykyk

  • The Marvels

    The Marvels

    ★★½

Half spunk, half schlock. Nia DaCosta is innocent and Iman Vellani is the cutest person to ever exist. I think we should just make movies about the Flerkens now. The FCU.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

    ★★★½

I adore how weird this is, and there’s a long take to No Sleep till Brooklyn that’s one of my favorite things I’ve seen this year. It wraps up everyone’s story in a really satisfying way, and is as visually interesting as these things get. I think the Gunn shtick has lost a bit of its novelty though, like everything he does here we’ve seen in the other movies in a different font (save for Rocket’s backstory which I thought…

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

    ★★★★

I love this movie unfortunately! There are several Marvel films that have allowed their directors to shine but this is the most shocking diversion in tone that there has ever been, and I get such gleeful delight from watching Raimi boss it up inside the MCU formula. The scene of Strange dreamwalking in his own corpse is unreal. Every time I watch I notice more parallels to Raimi's own films, and also take more to the script, that I agree is messy, but at least it actually has arcs and believes in something. And it believes that Pizza Poppa always gets paid bitch

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp

    Ant-Man and the Wasp

    ★★★½

In a shocking turn of events, I might think this is the best Ant-Man movie. Perfectly formulaic and fun, and refreshing after Quantumania because it manages to move the overall universe forward without losing sight of the main characters (they also really whiffed not having the Luis bit in the third one). Definitely has the best ant-stuff.

    Werewolf by Night

Saw this as the surprise screening at Fantastic Fest and color me surprised y’all because I actually dug this as someone who has had a love-hate relationship with Phase 4, but this is a pretty big departure tonally. Michael Giacchino’s love letter to monster movies that actually manages to capture the essence of those flicks despite the confines of it being an MCU project (don’t worry though there’s still plenty of formulaic humor). It’s short, surprisingly gory, and has some…

    Thor: The Dark World

I was going to give this 2.5 stars and then I went to log it and realized I literally don’t remember a single thing about the plot, and I watched it two days ago, and I’ve seen it three times now

    video here!

TL;DW: an endearing mess. I’m sure there are many of us who are inclined to forgive flaws here because of who’s behind the camera, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, and even so, Raimi breathes so much life into this despite a messy script and the usual confines of the MCU. There are some sick sequences in here, ‘sick’ in the cool way and the totally f*cked up/spooky way. Its personality totally won me over,…
