• Jacob's Ladder

    Jacob's Ladder

    ★★★½

Not sure the heavy-handed allegory here has aged very well, but the grimy world Lyne creates and the attention to unlawful military experiments is certainly timeless. Some of Tim Robbin’s best work, with an ending that is obvious but moving nonetheless. Shoutout chiropractors??

    Anyways Shutter Island clears🙄

    Event Horizon

    ★★★

Evil The Abyss. Though I do think the way this was cut down did a significant amount of damage, the Boschian depiction of hell is one of the gnarliest things I’ve ever seen and I hope the powers that be can get us the version Paul W. S. Anderson actually wanted one day

Me during the first part of the movie: it’s fine. I like the concept but it could be executed better. Clear Rivers is a dumb name.
    Tony Todd: *exists*
Me: is this the best movie ever?

Didn’t think this had even a dollop of sauce really but it gets points for pretending Serbia is Florida, which I think is very funny. Always a good time when we disagree on the pod, but sorry to the Crawl fandom😔☝🏼

  • Anaconda

    Anaconda

    ★★★

Cinema kind of peaked with horny 90s creature features, in which Oscar winning actors were using accents the world had never witnessed before and practical effects/CGI were at odds with each other more than the characters. Even the movies that were ‘bad’ had sensual on-location sunsets and delightful camerawork. Bring back blowing shit up don’t make me say it again!!

Holy shit, this is a slasher but the villain is spiders. Movies used to be good.

  • The Fourth Kind

    The Fourth Kind

    ★★½

This traumatized me as a child and is definitely responsible for my firm belief in aliens. I think it’s prime real estate for a remake. Revisiting I can safely say the so-called “real” elements hold up as pretty creepy possession-like found footage… but there’s some royally silly stuff in here and the foundation of it all doesn’t make a lot of sense. In the end though, what you believe is yours to decide.

    Cloverfield

Absolutely bonkers to revisit this and see that the scary monster movie that got seared into my brain as a kid is actually directed by Matt Reeves and a reflection on the events of 9/11 through the eyes of young people. J.J. Abrams may have been inspired by Godzilla but it’s still a testament to how much more rewarding even slightly original concepts are. We have our own trauma! A bit rough around the edges but can’t be replicated. The…

Only one year after Roe v. Wade was passed, one of the best slashers ever made was so radically pro-choice and hauntingly honest about the dangers women face that its impact is still reverberating throughout the genre today. About one year after Roe v. Wade was overturned, this movie is having its 50th anniversary. Fuck that a million times! Anyways it’s a masterpiece!

    Frozen

    ★★½

The pinnacle of New England canon, a movie that understands the beauty of random conversations to kill time on ski lifts, and how fucking scary they are. And the word wicked. It’s not great but it changed my brain chemistry.

    Krampus

“I haven’t felt this hungover since the pope died”

It’s not my favorite but seeing Krampus clomping around and running on rooftops gives me a rush that no superhero movie has accomplished this decade
