    ★★

Kyle Mooney asks us what if the Y2K bug became an existential threat in a balls-to-the-wall nostalgic comedy that’s like This is the End as a feature length SNL sketch. Better when it’s the latter (I’m talking SNL when it was good), I’ll always take a Hacker Man bit but I’m not sure I ultimately got that much out of it. Certainly lots of blasts from the past for people born before 2000. Rachel Zegler I love you but you definitely know what an iPhone is.

    “My tit.”

Being a teenage girl is grotesque and divine, it’s also quite silly and sad. Just like this movie! Diablo Cody’s real name is Brooke and she said that this script ended up being unexpectedly autobiographical, Needy and Jennifer representing her experiences before and after adopting a new persona and gaining attention as a writer. I really resonated with and appreciated her (in the interview I linked) reflecting on freeing ourselves from seeking external validation and the male…

Lily Gladstone gives one of the most important performances of the decade. Leonardo DiCaprio gets spanked. Thank you Martin Scorsese.

Carnival ride time machines and murder houses becoming burger joints, cool concept with a pretty softball script that gets in its own way with all the references etc. but this was a fun and easy watch nonetheless and i think it is very funny that she traveled back in time and discovered that her mom was an asshole

When your circle small but one of you is the Thing (it’s Childs).

Muahaha welcome to John Carpenter Month, we finally covered this on the pod and it was so fun to ramble about it in a way that doesn’t quite suit a Letterboxd review. A film that I think we hold dearer because it was initially so maligned, sometimes the world isn’t ready for great art but good thing it lives forever! Rob Bottin you will always be famous.

Of all the things to discuss about this jaw droppingly gorgeous, erotic, maximalist gothic opera about sexuality, sin, love, and where it all melts into the modern and the ancient, I can’t believe how frequently people only mention Keanu Reeves’ adorably stupid accent and performance. As if it matters. This shit is bonkers. Gary Oldman!!!

I could have watched Jason Statham on Jet Ski vs. Meg for the entire runtime of this, but unfortunately about 70% of the sequel to my favorite shark trash isn’t about the meg at all. I do find it so hilarious though how casual everyone is about the completely insane things that are happening. Happy national cinema day, chums.

This is kind of like if Big Trouble in Little China wasn’t in on its own joke but goddamn if Spielberg doesn’t create some of the most astonishing sequences ever put to film like it’s just a regular Tuesday
