This movie just makes so much sense to me. Everyone say thank you Rob Bottin

King Kong 1933
Movie magic! I really don’t know if we’ve gotten a version of this classic Kong story that I love, but cool to imagine the sweeping spectacle this was for the time. And it still is a sight to behold! Absolutely insane quote:
“Say, I guess I love you”
“Why, Jack! You hate women!”
“Yeah, i know :///“ -
Sting 2024
You know what… on one hand this was the clunky/generic stuff I expected, but on the other hand the whole end is trying to do Alien/Aliens and it doesn’t completely fail so I respect that. Not everyone will recognize your game, Sting (that name is a cool reference, too). None of the characters are all that likeable and it gets very tonally confused on its mission to B movie status, but at least there’s something going on here (read: clearly inspired by movies…

Late Night with the Devil 2023
Can confirm there is generative AI used in this, seems like a cutting corners post-production thing as it is only used in “we’ll be right back” transitional stills that appear maybe 3 or 4 times (the main logo might be too though?). Pretty disappointing that we are already seeing this happen, especially because the film is fun and stylistically neat otherwise. I don’t really get the huge reaction to it, but the approach to 70s late show nostalgia and satanic…

Azrael 2024
A devilish and delicious mix of post-apocalyptic biblical horror and action, it felt miraculous that it was pulled off until I realized Simon Barrett came up with it! It’s also tough to sell a film without dialogue, unless you have someone as charismatic and expressive as Samara Weaving as your leading woman. Then you don’t even notice the lack. This kicked a lot of ass.

Y2K 2024
Kyle Mooney asks us what if the Y2K bug became an existential threat in a balls-to-the-wall nostalgic comedy that’s like This is the End as a feature length SNL sketch. Better when it’s the latter (I’m talking SNL when it was good), I’ll always take a Hacker Man bit but I’m not sure I ultimately got that much out of it. Certainly lots of blasts from the past for people born before 2000. Rachel Zegler I love you but you definitely know what an iPhone is.

Anaconda 1997
Cinema kind of peaked with horny 90s creature features, in which Oscar winning actors were using accents the world had never witnessed before and practical effects/CGI were at odds with each other more than the characters. Even the movies that were ‘bad’ had sensual on-location sunsets and delightful camerawork. Bring back blowing shit up don’t make me say it again!!

In a Violent Nature 2024
Hell fucking yeah guys In a Violent Nature is a guaranteed cult favorite and the midnight crowd at Sundance went absolutely buck wild for it. Slasher tropes dismembered and put back together again, following the killer not the victims. Some of the gnarliest kills l've ever seen. There are obviously lots of slashers that try to pay homage and/or do something ‘different’ but, especially after hearing the Q&A, the combination here is genuinely singular and hard not to be fascinated by even…
