Best musical of the year I fear! I actually think making a musical version of this worked very well despite it feeling tonally grating a couple times while the film finds its footing, there is so much power in music and it offers new avenues for the cast (especially career musicians like Fantasia who is so good as Celie oh my lord) to bring emotion to the story. The soundtrack might not be groundbreaking but the songs and choreography are delivered with explosive energy and passion, bravo to Blitz Bazawule whose direction is stellar and what keeps the whole thing chugging. I was super impressed with a couple of these set pieces and it’s seriously hard to pick a favorite among these performances from Fantasia, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, etc. A super great time at the movies, it took me a bit to settle in but after the first act I didn’t feel the runtime at all and cried like a baby.
