I kind of have no idea what to make of this, I got some enjoyment in the moment after I adjusted to the weird blend of it being a musical/adaptation of a show that’s based on the movie? Those theater kids were singing their mf hearts out but a lot of high school movies that are set in modern day fall short trying to capture a social environment that just doesn’t exist anymore. This could objectively never be as good as the original (masterpiece btw) but it constantly reminds you of it by having basically the exact same script. It’s bolstered heavily by the performances though especially when it’s visually flat, everyone is very charismatic and I was surprised how much their takes on these characters worked. Avantika Vandanapu is so fucking funny. My big complaint there is that Angourie Rice is very good at playing a nerd but I did not buy her as plastic Cady for a second which is unfortunately like 75% of the plot. Ultimately there is fun to be had but it stays in the theater, I won’t really be thinking about this again. But I will be thinking about Reneé Rapp.
