There was action before Dev Patel and now there is action after Dev Patel. We asked him to save us so many times that he did that and completely reinvigorated the genre in the process - every moment of this explodes with the ferocity of someone with limitless passion and nothing to lose. Some will feel conflicted over the messy, guerilla-style approach to some of the visuals and narrative beats (Covid complications leading to iPhone footage, cameras swinging from ropes etc) but to me that just makes it feel more alive and exciting. A gritty, crackling mosaic of culture and action inspiration from all over the world. And, you know, I love the old ultraviolence. Dev Patel is a force of nature and I wouldn’t want to be his competition from here on out.
