    ★★★★

wonka is an instant holiday classic and a truly magical time at the movies 🥰 paul king’s whimsical style works as well here as it did in paddington, every musical number enchants, and the entire ensemble takes turns stealing the show, led by an endlessly charming timothée chalamet.

    Killers of the Flower Moon

    ★★★★½

i feel like when movies are described as “educational,” some people tend to look down on them. it makes a movie sound like a “chore,” or suggests that it’s more concerned with being used as a “teaching tool” than with being a “work of art.” but when i say that killers of the flower moon should be mandatory viewing in schools across the country, i think it’s perhaps some of the highest praise i could ever bestow upon a film -…

  • The Holdovers

    The Holdovers

    ★★★★★

this isn’t just a film set in the 70s - it feels like it’s been plucked from that time period, fully authentic the whole way through both stylistically and emotionally, with no artificiality to be found.
in anyone else’s hands, it’s easy to see this devolving into saccharine schmaltz; but here, because every emotional beat is arrived at organically, each is so enormously earned - and all the more moving.

paul giamatti is perfect. dominic sessa, a revelation. and da’vine joy randolph? the heart of it all.

alexander payne’s best since sideways. and at points, i thought it might just be his best period.

    Barbie

    ★★★★★

we all knew barbie was going to be funny. we all knew it’d have something to say about the “female coming-of-age,” as all of greta gerwig’s movies have thus far. and we all knew margot robbie and ryan gosling would turn in note-perfect performances as barbie and ken. and they did.

what i didn’t know was how much barbie would mean - not truly, not fully. how much it would mean to me, to the women sitting to my left…

  • No Hard Feelings

    No Hard Feelings

    ★★★★

no hard feelings is a shot in the arm of the studio comedy, giving the genre one of its funniest films in years thanks to its outrageous, unapologetic raunch. jennifer lawrence is at the height of her powers - hysterical and hot - and andrew barth feldman is every bit her equal.

if you think you’re gonna like this, you’re gonna like this. i have a nostalgic attachment to the big, bawdy R-rated studio comedies of the early 2000s, and…

  • Asteroid City

    Asteroid City

    ★★★★

there’s so much on wes anderson’s mind in asteroid city (and some could argue too much), but through all the mania and madness, he still earns our engagement with his committed ensemble cast of distinctly detailed characters (jason schwartzman MVP), consummate craftwork, and lyrical musings on the meaning of life - or if there even is one.

not quite the movie I expected it to be, as it’s a far more subversive story than the trailers sold it as, but it’s also…

    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

    ★★★★½

the sheer artistry on display here is so breathtaking that it nearly brings you to tears. but even beyond the awe-inspiring animation, the story’s beautiful blend of sincerity and epic spectacle redefines what superhero storytelling can - and should - be. a triumph (and maybe the definitive spider-man movie?).

  • The Little Mermaid

    The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid is a live-action remake that retains the heart and soul of the story we know and love, and it’s elevated even further by a note-perfect star-making performance from Halle Bailey - she was born to be on the big screen, and she’s why this new take is worth watching.

Bailey’s chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King is so infectious and natural and a huge highpoint for the film, while Melissa McCarthy devours every second of her screen time. The…
