    Carnage for Christmas

i’ve said it once and i’ll say it again: nobody is making movies like alice maio mackay right now, and this might be her best yet.

i’m always looking for more holiday horror, so if you give me that and a trans final girl i’m basically already sold, but when you throw in a suspenseful small town murder mystery, some truly gnarly gore, and sly queer social commentary to top it all off, i couldn’t ask for more.

i absolutely adoooooore alice maio mackay as both a filmmaker and a friend and i’m so glad she’s making movies right now because nobody - and i mean nobody - has a voice like hers.

i had the pleasure of watching t blockers almost a year ago and was blown away by her beautifully vicious vision and now that the official trailer is out i can’t recommend that you watch it (and the movie as well obviously) enough. trans women are the future of film babyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An truly dynamite debut - makes familiar subject matter feel fresh again thanks to Georgia Oakley’s crisp and clear artistic vision (the direction and shot composition in this are genuinely breathtaking) and Rosy McEwen’s frankly perfect performance, undeniably one of the best of the year so far.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I’ll start with the obvious: this is a significant step up from Lukas Dhont’s monstrously manipulative debut feature Girl (which I have a whole list of issues with for… very obvious reasons, lol), and ultimately, I was quite moved by Close. The first act is fantastic, and dare I say, maybe even close (ha) to flawless? Léo and Rémi’s friendship is so fantastically realized and realistic to the point where it feels like the camera disappears and we’re merely living
