struggling to find the words to sum up all the thoughts i have right now and all the things this made me feel so i’ll start with just one: human. remarkably honest, imperfect, angry, and ugly in a deeply human way that art is rarely ever allowed to be. both a reflection of What The World Has Become™ - or maybe always was - and also ourselves, accompanied by a sobering reminder that we have far more in common with each other than that which divides us.

i think it’s so commendable how luca guadagnino has made a career out of making straight boys kiss in movies and i hope he never stops

knew this was gonna be my shit as soon as it started with a dedication to “mom and joel schumacher.” vera drew is a goddamn legend and this film is gonna save lives. her whole heart and soul was spilled across that screen in every single scene, and it’s such a gift we got to see it.

“time wasn’t right. it was moving too fast. i was 19, and then i was 20, and then i was 21. like chapters skipped over in a dvd. i told myself ‘this isn’t normal. this isn’t normal. this isn’t how life is supposed to feel.’”

was stunned speechless for a few seconds after finishing this one. don’t know what else to say other than that it got under my skin in a way few films ever have, with its nightmarish sights and sounds already seared into my memory. knew this one would hit hard for Obvious Reasons (🏳️‍⚧️), but even after going in with that awareness, i still wasn’t fully prepared for how hard the hit would be. a devastating depiction of the all-consuming, soul-crushing nature of repression and how nostalgia can be both an escape and a prison.

trans art is so, so essential - especially in times like these - and i can’t emphasize that enough. it feels like i’ve been waiting for a film like this my whole life. but hey, better late than never :’)

haven’t actually rewatched this yet, but i slept on it and read a lot of great writing and woke up pretty pro-civil war (the movie not the conflict itself fyi).

struck most by its commentary on the futility of “neutrality” in journalism (what does “we record so other people ask” even mean? do lee and jessie not realize that they too are “staying out of it” in a way just like their parents? at what point do you become a participant in - and endorser of - what you’re photographing?), its portrayal of how little “political ideology” ultimately matters as an event like this escalates, even after hyperpoliticization is what caused it in the first place (the “he’s shooting at us, so we’re shooting at him” scene speaks to this so well), and the way the relationship between kirsten dunst’s lee and cailee spaeny’s jessie evolves, particularly when it comes to that final scene - which i think is the key to understanding the whole movie. “will you shoot it when it happens?” of course, because they’ll do anything for the shot - whether it’s coming from a gun or a camera. shoot first, ask questions later. all action, no emotion.

but what’s the cost of that shot?

this movie makes me so unbelievably happy!!!!!!!!!!!!! was listening to dan romer’s flawless (and unforgivably snubbed) score while writing this afternoon and got so swept up in it that i was like hm lemme actually just go watch this thing and then found myself falling in love with it all over again <3

what i’m writing at the moment has to do queer kids, so even if that wasn’t how i already interpreted luca and alberto’s relationship, i would’ve seen those shades to the story anyway, but i truly love the lack of explicit clarification here so much. it feels so true to life to me; i think it’s hard to explain the exact nature of your feelings for a Close Friend Who’s Maybe More when you don’t even know who or what you are yet, and i love that the movie doesn’t rush either boy - or their relationship - to a finite resolution. i think it fills the film with far more depth (allowing others to come to different conclusions i would’ve never seen myself) and makes it a more enduring work, one that will generate discussion for years to come.

i also just think there’s something so beautiful about letting the love luca and alberto so clearly feel for one another remain in that chaste space where we live most of our childhood. the right is so quick to associate queerness with sex and deviancy - commonly using this as a reason for why we must “protect” children from it - and yet here, in my opinion, you see that the first and purest form of true queer love is anything but grotesque or immoral. it’s rooted in genuine companionship, comfortability, and the discovery of a sanctuary in time spent with another person who sees and walks through the world the way you do, when you previously thought finding such a person was impossible.

hirokazu kore-eda’s monster is another movie that recently explored this uniquely queer experience with the delicacy and sensitivity it deserves (and it affected me quite similarly, if not even moreso), and i hope against hope that art like this continues to be put out into the world (i’m trying!!!), because it so beautifully depicts queerness as i see it, and as i wish the entire world will someday soon once we’ve dispelled the monstrous myths that have stuck to us - an existence characterized by the fullest freedom of both body and soul, and one that brings you into a community created with the warmest care, compassion, and camaraderie i’ve ever known.

i’m always looking for more holiday horror, so if you give me that and a trans final girl i’m basically already sold, but when you throw in a suspenseful small town murder mystery, some truly gnarly gore, and sly queer social commentary to top it all off, i couldn’t ask for more.

in a just world, this would be a new christmas horror classic - and as always, i can’t wait to see what alice does next (and how she inexplicably one-ups herself yet again).

i absolutely adoooooore alice maio mackay as both a filmmaker and a friend and i’m so glad she’s making movies right now because nobody - and i mean nobody - has a voice like hers.

i had the pleasure of watching t blockers almost a year ago and was blown away by her beautifully vicious vision and now that the official trailer is out i can’t recommend that you watch it (and the movie as well obviously) enough. trans women are the future of film babyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“i try to tighten my heart into a knot, a snarl, i try to learn to live dead, just numb, but then i see someone i want, and it's like a nail, like a hot spike right through my chest, and i know i’m losing.”

i first learned what AIDS was in my eighth grade health class, during a unit on STDs. we learned its history, its symptoms, its causes, its prognosis, and who it affected - “homosexuals and addicts.” the word choice was very purposeful.

it wasn’t the first i’d heard of AIDS whatsoever - as it or “gay cancer” used to be one of the most popular insults on the playground behind “fag” or “fairy” - but it was the first time i truly realized the role it played in my life, and my history. and it scared the fucking shit out of me.

i was only 13 at the time - too young to know what “love” was beyond a word, but old enough to know that the world thought the burgeoning unnamed feelings i felt for boys were “wrong.” back then, i only thought concealing and denying my sexuality was necessary for social survival; but that day, i realized it was a matter of life and death as well.

i was overcome by some sort of supernatural strength in my latest attempt to make myself straight, driven by the deepest desperation i had ever known. accepting and adopting a “gay lifestyle” would now not only lead to my social ostracization, but also my early demise. i couldn’t have that. i wouldn’t have that.

i tried to force myself to have feelings for female classmates. i prayed every single night to a god i didn’t even know if i believed in to rid me of this sickness. and at times, during my strongest struggles, i would resort to self harm, hitting my head with my hands or whacking it against a wall any time i thought about a boy in a sexual sense, or any time i woke up from yet another amorous dream that taunted me with its deviancy.

before long, i learned that AIDS wasn’t near as deadly these days - the early 2010s - as it was in the 80s, during reagan’s reign. it still existed, sure, but it was no longer a “death sentence.” though, that didn’t really change things - its presence alone petrified me and convinced me for years that a queer life was inherently unhappy and unfulfilling, and that sex with another man would be signing a deal with the devil in more ways than one.

as i came of age, i continued research on my own, reading whatever i could on the AIDS epidemic and realizing for the first time how much history of the world had been hidden from me. in a way, i think this was also my first radicalization, as engaging with the enormity of the pains of the queer community’s past brought me closer to it than ever before, and further from the life i’d led up until this point.

said pain had been reduced to a punchline by so many men i’d met over my earliest years on this earth, over and over and over again - uttered either with enmity or casual callousness in everyday conversation - and it was a punchline i had internalized as truth. gay people were sick, literally and figuratively, and there was no way around that - ever.

i’d also grown up regarding ronald reagan as one of the greatest presidents in american history - or so i’d been told by an alarming number of adults over the last decade and a half - and now i’d come to find that he was in fact actually one of my greatest enemies all along, well before i was even born. and an enemy who threatened not just my existence, but everyone like me.

this revelation forced me to question all the other political and religious beliefs that had been pushed upon me over the years - how many of them were lies as well? when the answer turned out to be “almost all,” i threw myself even further into queer history, straining to rebuild my sense of self with a more honest foundation. and this time, the bricks were laid with love, rather than hate.

and yet, continuing my aforementioned engagement with the enormity of the pains of the queer community’s past was just that - fucking painful. seeing how much we suffered (and continued to) and how many lives were lost made me feel like the fight for equal rights was a futile one. we were up against forces that felt no guilt when it came to their unceasing cruelty, and we always would be.

additionally, as i started to give in to my insecurities with my gender identity for the first time as well, i saw how the trans people who took part in this movement - and most specifically, the trans women - were the most mistreated of all, and oftentimes had their contributions to our progress struck from the already near-barren history books. what did that mean for me and my future? would i suffer the same fate if i admitted and accepted this other dark secret to myself too?

at this same time, i - ever the english nerd, even from an embarrassingly young age - started attending a creative writing camp every summer. and, to start our day there, our counselors would teach us a new word every morning, a few of which didn’t have direct english translations (an exercise that forced us to think beyond the limits of the english language). many of these stuck with me, including the korean concept of “han.”

suh nam-dong, one of the founders of korean minjung theology, described han as “a feeling of unresolved resentment against injustices suffered, a sense of helplessness because of the overwhelming odds against one, a feeling of acute pain in one’s guts and bowels, making the whole body writhe and squirm, and an obstinate urge to take revenge and to right the wrong - all these combined.” more simply, the weight of unbearable and unspeakable suffering shared by a specific community - in this case, koreans.

though this word originated to describe koreans’ grief alone, i thought of how many minority communities shared a similar indescribable anguish (the black community, the jewish community, the queer community, and so on and so forth) and han was able to put a word to the feelings i felt acknowledging the atrocities my ancestors endured - and the way their pain was passed down in the blood and bones of the generations that followed - where there was once none, even if it couldn’t apply to me and us completely. still, it spoke volumes.

but once we’ve acknowledged and accepted our shared suffering, where do we go from there? what is the next step? is there one? at first, i wasn’t sure. this shared suffering couldn’t be erased - it was a part of us now, both existentially and physically. but then i thought about that statement again. though we suffered - and would continue to - we didn’t suffer alone, and we never would. half of han is heartbreak, but the other half speaks to the solace that the shared nature of said heartbreak provides. and that’s how we survive.

i think now of the final lines in angels in america: “this disease will be the end of many of us, but not nearly all. and the dead will be commemorated, and will struggle on with the living and we are not going away. we won't die secret deaths anymore. the world only spins forward, we will be citizens. the time has come. bye now, you are fabulous each and every one and i bless you. more life, the great work begins.”

we hold in our hearts a grief so great that it’s a near-biblical miracle we’re able to get out of bed each morning and deal with the superficial strife of everyday life while trying to simultaneously silence the ever-present suffering inside, but the oddest part of all is that this debilitating distress somehow also doubles as a stimulant - a motivator, if you will. its unavoidable presence urges us, at all times, to honor lives and loves lost by preserving their legacies through our perpetual and annoyingly persistent push for progress. by building a better future in their name. because as long as we fight, they will never be forgotten.
