A young woman is very bad at her job but it's sort of not her fault since apparently it takes 18 hours for a coroner to get to a place she hiked to in an afternoon. Anyway I thought this was stupid.
At a time when so many low-budget indies seem resigned to streaming, Roxanne Benjamin’s fun and forgettable “Body at Brighton Rock” feels ready-made for a Friday night on your couch. It’s a total slumber party of a movie, told with plenty of skill, even more potential, and an utter lack of preciousness from its delightful opening moments to its enjoyable shrug of a last-minute twist. A large part of that appeal is owed to the throwback vibe of a movie that eschews straightforward nostalgia in favor of a subdermal longing for a more innocent time. signs being a park ranger isn't for you:
- you regularly litter
- you get freaked out by sounds in the forest
- you easily get lost
- you contaminate a possible crime scene
- you don't really like most animals
- you throw your radio away in a cathartic display of littering
The idea of the scalability of horror occurred to me as I watched this. In the hands of an able practitioner a film should be scary because the director wills it. But inside its walls, what scares the protagonist? That will change from person to person, situation to situation. So when Roxanne Benjamin tailors the boundaries of this film's fear to that of a green young ranger trainee who's apparently frightened by the mere prospect of being outdoors, I'm into it. At first.

This is a pretty interesting movie. It doesn't reinvent the horror genre wheel and doesn't do anything too ambitious, but for a short, low-key thriller, it is a quick and intense watch. And as a filmmaker, I'm impressed how much the director got out of so little resources

A difficult trail and she's on her own. I have a terrible sense of direction. I always fuck up, so I feared for this girl right away. Still her dancing through the woods is legendary. I'm so sick of my daily walks I think I'll step it up a gear and skip wiggle and pony tail hair toss my way around.
Spending the night with the dead body, that's hard. All those films you've ever watched, here you go. But honey that dead body has a tale to tell, it's not going to let you down. Be cool with it. Oh and remember beasts are hungry for rotten flesh and of course the actual killer. Prove them all wrong, you can do it.

Don’t go in the woods...alone. Poppy survival picture that stretches an already threadbare premise thin, yet maintains a creepy “hang out horror” vibe throughout. Now I’m super intrigued to see what Roxanne Benjamin does with NIGHT OF THE COMET. Bonus: Oingo Boingo!
A lot of nothing happens, but the score is working overtime to try to scare you. And then there's the dream sequences that really took me out of the movie.
But I dunno, it's silly but it's watchable. Kind of fun waiting to see which scary creaking tree she was going to be freaked out by next. And let's be honest, if you put yourself in her head space and imagined being in that situation, you can probably understand why she's so freaked out. And maybe even why she does completely silly things....constantly.
I did love her dancing through the woods to Expose's "Point of No Return" though.
The ending was stupid.
Hello Letterboxd people. Chad here. I saw Immaculate today. Now I'm reluctant to see any nun horror as I don't really want to watch anything that's blasphemous. But that movie really wasn't bad. A solid 3 star effort. But what was as good as watching a decent horror was being a part of a good attendance in the seats. The theatre room is a 70 person capacity, but the room was almost packed.

How many recklessly stupid things can one character do before you stop caring if they live or die? When it’s human versus nature, the stakes should be clear. This movie isn’t as bad as The Revenant, where I actively rooted for the elements, but I had the same wearying “OK, what ordeal is next?” sensation. (It wasn’t helped here by Hulu’s key art spoiling the last five minutes.)
It’s too bad — the bones of this tale could make for a leaner, more effective thriller. Writer-director Roxanne Benjamin has a fertile idea that she executes with some clear skill. One of the virtues of her contribution to the XX anthology was its get-in/get-out velocity; this one feels padded at just 87 minutes.
Still, there’s enough here to anticipate Benjamin’s upcoming Blumhouse picture; that it’s not her script could be a plus.
